Lip trills and shakes are not the same thing with a different name.
I am using the shake technique I learned as a kid on WSS.
Wilmer
No kidding. There are a lot of techniques unique to jazz (shakes among them) that you're not going to get from anyone from outside that tradition. Listen to Wilmer, he knows of whence he speaks. You'd want to find out about other things, like, say, plunger technique from him too.

Re: Lip Trills/Shakes

Interestingly both Louis Armstrong and Maurice Andre press down a valve and physically move the instrument to introduce vibrato.
It must be a built in feature of Selmer trumpets.

I agree. Plunger technique can not be taught with words. It is totally about listening to the masters and discovering the plunger sound you want.

Violin players apply vibrato also by moving their hand. We are fortunate that we have multiple vibrato producing techniques - that all sound different and can be used for different effects!

Re: Lip Trills/Shakes

I have to say that the shake has been a bit of an enigma for me. I can do decent lip trills, even fast if I want to, but I'm certainly not getting the effect I want when I try to do a shake. I'm guessing it's a bit more to it than just shaking your hand. I try to sort of use the air flow, but it ends up rather as a fast lip trill. What is it that I don't get?
