Re: The most underated trumpet player

Guido Basso is the king for us Canucks. He influenced all of us up here . I wish he would have recorded more solo stuff. The 2 albums with him and Dave Turner(a great alto artist here in Montreal) are great (Midnight Martini and Dedications on the Justin Time label eMusic MP3 Music and Audiobook Downloads) and his classic solo's and flugel tone while in Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass(his solo in Portrait of Jenny is an emotional roller coaster and can be found on The Jazz Album and his tone on flugel is legendary in Close Enough for Love on the Grammy winner All In Good Time). I'm glad you mentioned him Mr. Vega!

I was in Toronto last year for the festival put together by Jane and Larry......played with an allstar Canadian Big Band.....too much fun and getting paid for it. PURE JOY!!!! Anyway, while there I picked up a really fantastic CD of Guido's with a string orchestra conducted and arranged by Phil Dryer.
Guido Basso playing in nothing short of Pure Genius!!!

Canada has given us so many fantastic players. Among them: Maynard, Kenny Wheeler, Guido Basso, Arnie Chikofski(Spelling?).......and person that I love dearly and consider more then a colleague, Ingrid Jensen.
I love her music.....
There is something right in the water!!! Great Jazzers and Great Lead players.....nuff said!

Re: The most underated trumpet player

Oscar Peterson was also Canadian.

Canadians with talent were smart enough to get out of Canada and live in the US.

Ray,

I am so glad you mentioned Irvin Stokes. I did not know that he had passed on. I used to love hearing hoim and Virgil Jones, (not at the same time, not enough hair) with the Illinois Jacquet Band, where I also saw Carmell Jones play lead once.
