![]() | Re: Playing fast... playing fast passages? 1 - what Mendez says 2 - check out "the art of jazz trumpet" vol 2 by John McNeil. this is an excellent book full of articulation studies which facilitate playing fast passages. the basic concept is tongue-slur-tongue-slur, although there are many other types of articulation which help with intervals. This approach also helps with timing and swing emphasis. listen to any good player and take notice of the articulations used in executing their phrases. 3. - learn short licks fairly slow and speed them up until they can be executed accurately at speed. start joining thme together. 4. it takes time and practice - no short cuts.

![]() | Re: Playing fast... I had the hippest reply up for you all and lost it in cyberspace.grrr Take 2 Playing fast is easy! I learned to feel double time playing along with Bird as he is the master of forward motion. The main jist of my lost message was to check out Hal Galpers book, Forward Motion. It's great and deals with this subject beautifully. The two things that have really helped me over the years are 1. Playing strong, even time while practicing changes, melodies and fundamental studies. 2. Starting my studies and ideas on different parts of the beat. With your metronome on all four beats at a slow tempo (balladlike) start approaching each chord or scale tone from a step above or below from the 'and' of the bar before. You can do this with 1/4s and 1/2 notes as well. This is especially helpful in hearing where you are going and where the music is going as well. have fun ...ingrid (aka Santa Clause) |
