| Hi everyone, Here's an update ( and clarification ) on the Sol Castron portion of the thread. The Philadelphia Phil. had summers off, not winters off Sol Castron was a Max Schlossberg student, not an Ernest Williams student. Mr. Castron played with the Phil. from 1918 to 1945 (leaving time past 1945 for other types of work) I'd like to thank the great “Mr. Wilmer Wise " (who sent me a very nice personal e-mails about this and other thoughts) for helping all of us better understand the era that was Mr. Castron's time and for keeping the facts as accurate as possible. Even thou I did check with local players that played in the scene during the 40’s, dates and years always seem to be the hardest to get 100 percent accurate especially as memories of events that are now over 60 years old, are re-told. Please, everyone, if you haven’t heard Mr. Wise’s playing , please do yourself a favor and pick up a re-issue ( or new ) CD of his recording achievements. It's well worth the investment. I'm sure Mr. Wise is too modest to list all the album's he's played on, but if you e-mail me personally, I'll tell you my favorites. I am a big fan of Broadway cast albums and have many that show Mr. Wise's talents, plus his work with Phillip Glass and others is playing at it's finest. LG |

| In Bakersfield,CA ( not far from Los Angeles) there is a retired trumpet-- Johnny Lacertoso. His eye sight went away and he gave up teaching many years ago. He was THE teacher for decades. He played in the studios until he was drafted in '39. He tells stories of taking lessons from Maggio, running around with Harold Mitchell- they would go down to the Olds factory and test horns for them. And he speaks of greats like Mannie Klein. He said he played lead for Stan Kenton for a short time also. The war changed his studio days and he never returned to the studios. |
