Snookey, Wendell, Thad, and Joe

YouTube - Count Basie Orchestra - Zurich 1959

BTW that is Al Grey, not Benny Powell on the bone solo

Thad is the composer/arranger

Al Grey came to my factory with Red Holloway. We had a nice talk about Basie and things. He said that Wendell Culley quit one day suddenly and gave up Music. The Basie Band was in Vegas. They would not allow Wendell to stay a the hotel he wanted to stay at. He had enough. This was 1959. He sold insurance till he died.

This track is from "Chairman of the Board", on Roulette. Mostly Thad and Frank Foster charts. My favorite Basie record. The zenith of trumpet section playing. Snooky's solo on "Who Me" is a killer. Not bad for a lead player

Enjoy

My favorite is Snooky's solo at the beginning of "TV Time". That is a great solo regardless of being a great lead player or not!

The LP did not credit Snooky. The cd did. I knew it was him .Couldn't be anyone else. Kissing those notes. Gotta be Snooky

Thad's HRH is a perfect chart. It has everything

The studio version is even better.

Al told me that some young hotshot kid thought he was God's gift to the plunger. He did not know who Al was. For the sake of reality, Al showed him what humility was all about.

We all need that. Dave Liebman told me that he thought he was a hotshot Jazz player. He took a lesson with Lennie Tristano. Lennie put him in his place. Lieb said that helped his carreer more than anything

My high school buddy, George Gesslein, thought he was a hot shot lead bone player out of High School. He took one lesson with Wayne Andre, heard him play, and bought a bass bone the next day

There is nothing like reality
