![]() | Starting a jazz quartet - need advice on equipment I’m a trumpet player and am about to attempt to start my own jazz quartet. I need drums, bass and piano/keys. Looking to play jazz standards out of a fakebook and play local restaurants. I own zero, nada, no equipment like mics, speakers, amps. Are these things necessary for my group for the type of music and venues? Plus I myself have $0 to buy anything but my fakebook. Thanks.

![]() | Re: Starting a jazz quartet - need advice on equipment Depending on your venue, you're more likely to need a few mutes than anything to amplify your group. Your keyboard player will need an amp if they are not playing accoustic piano, but that is the player's responsibility. If you're only playing background music, there's no need to amplify in most cases.

![]() | Re: Starting a jazz quartet - need advice on equipment Our high school jazz band used to play regularly at the country club resteraunt in my area... the keyboard player didn't use an amp, just the speakers on the keyboard... we found it was a great way to "force" the drummer to chill out...

![]() | Re: Starting a jazz quartet - need advice on equipment I agree with the posters above. You won't need any PA gear unless you're playing large venues. You'll be more than loud enough for small venues.
