Stravinsky's Guess as to What Jazz Sounded Like

In 1918, Stravinsky wrote a piece called the Soldier's Tale. He wanted to base it on "Jazz". He never heard Jazz but saw it written down. He chose 2 instruments from each section and one player to play all the percussion. He substituted the Bassoon for the Sax. The piece has three speakers and is danced

I think Igor was going for Ragtime, the "Original Dixeland Jass Band" hadn't even recorded yet.
I played something at the Marlboro Festival with Schwalbe. He was a fantastic player. He was one of the Berlin Philharmonic's Concertmasters.

I do not know when Schwalbe started in the Suisse Romande. I do know that Karajan needed a Concerrmaster for Berlin and grabbed him in 1957

His playing on this Soldier's Tale is fantastic, as is Longinotti's Cornet

Re: Stravinsky's Guess as to What Jazz Sounded Like

My son and I saw this performed at TCU in Ft. Worth by Wynton Marsalis - he did it straight Stravinsky - then after intermission performed Wynton's Harlem stylized version of it - incredible performance. Still can't believe my son (who was in middle school at the time) - sat through the entire performance. A lot of adults bailed after the first half! And we got to meet Wynton afterwards to cap it off! And if memory serves me right - Ben Vereen was the narrator!

Re: Stravinsky's Guess as to What Jazz Sounded Like

Just remembered - David Taylor was the trombone player with Wynton for this performance. First I had ever seen him perform too - they were both awesome!

Duke and Mingus studied his scores relentlessly as well.
