I am not aware of your capabilities but would suggest listening to some Chet Baker. Alot of his solos are really smooth and easy to pick up by ear. They are not out of reach technically, for probably about 60% of all trumpeters out there. Not to mention this will really help develop your ear. Just my opinion.

Re: What should I play?

Are we talking about improv or ensemble? I get the feeling it's improv.
I agree with suggestions of Chet Baker, maybe also Freddie Hubbard, definitely Horace Silver, if your looking for something between Mile and Diz. Incidentally, if you are looking for ensemble stuff that is not frantic or ultra-high, I also suggest listening to Miles' Nonet (Birth of the Cool), and the Gil Evans Orchestra.

Get a well-rounded sampling, though. Not everything will be Gordon Goodwin, etc. Listen to Bunny Berigan, Harry James, Mario Bauza, Snooky Young, Cootie Williams and Clark Terry. Get a feel for all their styles, and use that as the smorgasbord to build your own, unique style!

Good Luck!
