![]() | GR 67L But for many years before that a Bach 1.25 w/ schmidt backbore. I would love to try one (or many) of Dave Monette's creations but I don't know where I could do that here in Phoenix. I still think it would be great if there was a big spirit in the sky that would come down and give you YOUR mouthpiece for life... I envy those players that have a marriage made in heaven with their pieces... and guys, I mean a marriage and not a one night stand... Almost everything feels great at first... (okay... I know some of you... keep this PG-13) |

I have played basically the same mouthpiece since 1978. That year a great player in Detroit named Burt Rosen gave a MF Horn to try as I was looking for a new horn. He also said I needed to try a new mouthpiece. He gave me a Jet Tone Bill Chase. I thought it was too small but he asked me to try it. When Burt suggested something a wise person listened. Well, I never gave it back. The mouthpiece was perfect for me. I even survived all the Jet Tone jokes. After many years it was becoming worn out, silver off etc. I tried many others including Schilke and Parduba. I had a few discussions with Dave and bought two of his smallest mouthpieces. The closest was a Lead mouthpiece, BL9 dot. Finally I spoke Bruce Lee and after talking with him I bought a Northern Brass 63***, made by GR. It is a Jet Tone Bill Chase, reverse engineered. That was real close. Jet Tone had always had quality control issues...not two BC's I played were ever exactly the same. I talked to Gary Radke and explained my problem. The 63*** felt almost right but the rim was a little small. I miced my personal Chase Jet Tone and found it to be .021 wider than the 63***. Gary made me a new one to my exact dimensions and it was perfect. So now I play what is essentially a GR Bill Chase. The same mouthpiece I have played for almost 30 years. -cw-

| Fortissimo User | About two (is it THAT long?) years back I switched my cornet piece from a Wick 4B to a Sparx #4. I loved it so much I decided to change my trumpet mouthpiece too. I had been using a Warburton 4B on a B9 backbore. I "consulted" with Bruce Lee, giving my "history", music played, etc. and telling him I was looking for a crisper and cleaner upper range but without sacrificing (improving if possible) the low F# through A where I had been struggling with the old learner's "high range/low range" thing. He put me onto the GR 66*** explaining that it had the relatively open backbore, the identical rim shape to the Sparx 4 but a slightly larger rim dia. (the Sparx 4 roughly equivalent to the GR 65 series). He told me that because of the shallower cup with a bit less lip engagement I wouldn't find much change or loss of range due to the extra diameter (10 thou). Since then I only tried something different out for a week.... in a moment of madness I bought a GR66** thinking that the tighter backbore would help my upper range. Poor me... the cup was even shallower than on the 66*** and I started to "bottom out". Lost my low range too. Didn't waste any time and gave the 66** to my son who loves it. I've never even been TEMPTED to try anything else since and only carry the one mouthpiece with me... it works on my Schilke B1 as well (which is actually the horn I was playing when I got the GR). |
