What would YOU rather do: Play lead or jazz? - Page 3

In our band, The Signature Jazz Orchestra, Louisville, KY. the Lead trumpet plays the first part, the solo or ride (jazz if you prefer) trumpet is in the second part. Guess who plays the third part? ME. Yep, third is my favorite part too. We have some charts that are written with third part getting the melodic solos while the 2nd trumpet plays a jazzy ride going on behind the melody while the 1st trumpet rest. And yes, sight reading is a skill that must be developed quickly, but I think this is true in any big band environment.

I enjoy playing any part in a good philhormonic orchestra. I love the orchestra more than any other musical group I play in. There, every trumpet part is important no matter the seating position.

Im all about the jazz playing, thats where my heart is. Unfortunatly I dont have access to professional bands all the time, I just play in school and local bands (until I go to college soon, cant wait). In small local bands like the one I play in, if you play well, you have to do everything. So Ive been forced into having lead chops along with jazz chops. I hated doing it most of the time, but its probably for the best.

Since I can't do either... I'm going to treat this as a fantasy question...

If I could wish for one OR the other... I'd wish for LEAD chops. But I'd rather have a blend of the two... maybe a solid, anytime G and good improv chops too...

And... as this is a fantasy...throw in a new Monette Prana Bb and Flumpet.

I do play lead, but only because I've always been able to play high and loud.. I'd much rather develop into a good jazz player. As fun as it is for me to just nail a high note at the end of an exciting chart, I'd rather have a fantastic solo where people come up to me afterwards to tell me that it sounded good.

In a fantasy world I'd love to play the jazz book. In reality I play the 3rd book and some of the lead stuff. In fact, the other day I used some of that sight reading learned on 3rd to help me play the lead part when Gary and I switched in the middle of a tune. I love my job

hey Mike, I heard you were takin the reigns when I left outta there. How's the book treating you? I'm getting a ton of practice in here, but I do miss having an avenue to blow jazz besides my practice room.
Anyway, for the record, I love playing lead and soloing and I don't really know which I'd rather do. Probably both...

Interesting discussion, no doubt.

Well, I play trumpet 2 in a couple of big bands and its hard to choose. The one band has been around since the 40's so we play a lot of the 'classic' big band stuff. For that band its fun to play lead book because there's a lot of great old solos on the Miller tunes, Stardust, Misty...

In the second band we play newer, more difficult and varied charts (such as Sandunga) where there are almost no solos written in the lead part. I don't have the chops to play all the stuff in the lead book (like the MF charts), but even if I did I think I would really miss all the rides I get to take in the 2 spot.

So, if I could go back to the 40's or 50's I'd prefer the lead book, but in today's groups I like the 2nd book.

ps - actually, as long as we're dreaming - I'd play lead like Roger Ingram and play jazz like Leroy Jones!

I play both, but I prefer the jazz chair mainly because I like to create and play melodies. And, the second chair usually has the really cool notes of the chord when the ensemble is playing.
