Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

Just got the new Jim Manley cd, "Splendor In Brass 2". It is REALLY good. It is a big band treatment of jazz standards with numerous solos. Some really great St. Louis musicians are on the sessions. Jim sounds great. His sound has really gotten big. He seems to just keep getting better. I didn't think that was supposed to happen with us guys over 50?

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

I have recently been listening to a lot of Harry James as a result of the fact that I am re-reading the book "TrumpetBlues" I bought a CD last night which is a recording done in the 50's (55 to 58). It is a very good example of when Harry started to pattern his band after Count Basie , very swinging band and some amazing trumpet playing, both by Harry and trumpet section.

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

I am in the process of transferring a lot of my cassette tapes onto CD, and it has given me the opportunity to listen to a lot of music I haven't heard in a long time. Just finished Al Hirt - Live at Carnegie Hall, and currently Wynton's Standard Time Vol. 1 is playing. Good stuff.

Richard

I recently bought " The Legendary Trumpet Virtuosity of Rafael Mendez". It brings back wonderful memories of when I was able hear him play live as a 13 year old. Several of the schools in our city had him come to give master classes and then we all went to a concert in a local cinema. He so inspired me that I took up the trumpet. I had never heard anything like it in my life....but I am so thankful that I did. The recordings we have now only give a tiny taste of his sound because of the poor recording equipment of the day but I still get the tingles when I remember his music......he really was a great player and someone to look up to a..... "real gentleman".

Walter

PS Maybe not Jazz but certainly a "Trumpet Master"

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

Today I watched a DVD of Harry Connick Jr. I have to admit I have not really followed his music other then on the radio when it comes on. Anyway, I came away with two observations. 1. On this DVD, there was a real empowerment of the entire band. It appeared that they all had a great playing relationship and he honored them throughout the show. He knew all their names, he praised their playing, had them come out for featured solos and had fun interacting with them. It was obvious that the arrangements were designed to showcase not only his talent, but the talent of his band. I was impressed by this! 2. I was facsinated with was the Electronic Music Display System they all used. I am going to start another thread on this topic as I would love to hear if anyone has had experience with paperless electronic music systems. I did some research and it turns out it is a technology he has a patent on! Two companies that I am familiar with for our church band application ( I am a worship pastor) is e-stand and freehand. Apparently this is his own design. Anway, I enjoyed the DVD.

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

Last couple of days...Terence Blanchard, Miles Live at the Blackhawk, a bunch of Jackie McLean and Donald Byrd. I am also about to continue working my way through the multi-disc box set ot the complete recordings of Krzysztof Komeda, most of which includes Tomasz Stanko. I saw Tomasz at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge, MA. Wonderful experience.
