![]() | Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately? I’ve been listening to “Big Blues” with Art Farmer and Jim Hall. I’m working on memorizing Art’s “A Child is Born” solo from this imported recording. I really enjoy Art’s sound and lyricism and want to incorporate these aspects into my trumpet and flugelhorn playing as much as possible and hopefully some day (maybe within the next 10, 20, or 30 years) have my own voice emerge from this context. This solo is very unique in that Art decides to use a Harmon flugel mute, which I’ve never heard about until this recording. I’m also into flugelhorn recordings with Jim Hall. I’ve got one with Jim and Tom Harrell. Janell

![]() | Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately? * Ingrid Jensen’s Nordic Connect – She is my favorite living jazz trumpet player. This is Ingrid’s most recent recording. * Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue – I am playing along with the transcription book with Miles’ alternate take of "Flamenco Sketches" * Thad Jones/Mel Lewis’ Consummation – I am playing along with Thad Jones on his solo, "Dedication" on my Martin Imperial flugelhorn. I purchased a copy of the lead trumpet book some time ago, but now I use it to work on just Thad’s solos. I will fill in the rest of the solo by transcribing the remainder of it. * Kenny Dorham’s Quiet Kenny – I just got this CD the other night. “Kenny Dorham is at his lyrical best [liner notes].” I really like “My Ideal,” “Alone Together,” and “Old Folks” for their lyrical quality.

![]() | Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately? I just picked up a CD reissue of Eddie Henderson's first two records, Realization and Inside Out on the Capricorn label. Basically Herbie's Mwandishi band under Eddie's leadership. I hadn't heard them in many years, they hold up well, even with the strong Miles influence. Joe Henderson's Art of the Tenor, which I used to have on vinyl but can't find anymore, I've been going through a Joe Henderson period. (I listen to sax players a lot). And a DVD, Jammin' the Blues, which has three tracks with Lester Young, two with Basie 1941 big band (Illinois Jacquet, Harry Edison, Al Killian, Tab Smith, Earl Warren) and four with Basie's small band from 1951, a young Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, and Wardell Gray. Fun, fun, fun. Michael McLaughlin

![]() | Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately? Miles Davis in Person, Friday & Saturday Night @ the Blackhawk, San Francisco.. This Quintet does not get enough recognition, one of my favorite live Miles' recordings. This group swings so hard that it makes my big toe stand up in my boot!

![]() | Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately? Music I have been listening too lately: Donny McCaslin - Soar David Binney - live gigs, you can download them at his website David Binney .com Maria Schneider - Concert in the Garden Kurt Elling - Nightmoves Kenny Werner - Lawn Chair Society (Dave Douglas, Chris Potter) Sherisse Roger's - Sleight of Hand - A friend of mine from college. Her big band, beautiful compositions and arrangements. Recently saw them play at the Jazz Gallery, and picked up her cd. Hey Janell, I love the Jim Hall stuff with Art as well. There are a bunch of recordings from the 60's with the same band; Jim Hall (guitar), Art Farmer (flugelhorn), Steve Swallow (bass), and Pete La Roca (drums). i really like "To Sweden with Love". there is also a live album, which i believe is packaged together now "to Sweden.." Also Jim Hall's "These Rooms" with Tom Harrell is one of my all time favorites.
