Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

Manu Katche's newest release Playground featuring a great trumpeter by the name of Mathias Eick. Sounds very similar in tone to Tomaz Stanko in my opinion. CD is well worth buying. Also a lot of Louis Armstrong lately as well as Wynton Marsalis.

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

I am listening to John McNeil and Bill McHenry's "Rediscovery" CD and loving these 1950 gems. It is available for preorder on Amazon and other major sites and will be released on May 6th. It features lesser known gems that are memorable to me only because I have heard him playing them live at the Village Vanguard, Cornelia Street Cafe and the Biscuit in Brooklyn. If you are having a lousy day, just listen to John play "Happy Little Sunbeam" and that should cheer you up. John omits his great sense of humor from the CD, except when it comes out in the music. For his jokes, you will have to hear him live at his CD release on May 17th at the Cornelia Street Café.

Great CD!!!

I'm not one of these louder/faster guys, so I really dig the Tomasz Stanko thing, thanks! Patches Stewart had a disc called "Blow" that was pretty funky, like to see more players like that.--HH

Minnesota Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Canadian Brass, Doc Severinsen, Wynton Marsalis, and Philip Smith. Oh, and a little Minnesota Youth Symphony stuff, too :)

I just picked up Jason Palmer's new side. It's really hip. Great tone and great trumpet playing with hip ideas.

Re: Whatcha been lis'nin to lately?

I've just stumbled across "Airman of Note" - USAF Big Band that historically follows-on from Glenn Miller's efforts up to his loss in 1942. There are a number of their tracks on-line (407 I think) and I'm exploring the transition through the various influences of the different Band Leaders and arrangers from the early '60s through to about 2006. Very interesting set of .mp3 files on-line.
