Thanks so much for introducing this guy to me. I never heard of him until now. I will certainly get a couple cd's of his. What a nice trumpet player, just a nice trumpet player.

I've actually wipped out Alain Trudel to show someone the other day and I've been listening to him since. But other than that I have been stuck in the Arturo Sandoval phase for almost a year. Maynard seems to be a thing of the past for me, James Morrison is also a fav of mine, as well as Nicolas Eklund.

Chick Corea, as well.

happy listening

Dave Douglas--Strange Liberation
Horace Silver--Six Pieces of Silver

.... and I just walked over to the mailbox and saw that my package from Amazon is waiting for me at the rental office.

So I will be (on Monday) listening to:

Kenny Wheeler--What Now?
GodSpeed You Black Emporer--Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antenae To The Heavens
Explosions in the Sky--(forget which album)
Eric Whitacre--(again, I forget, but it's all choral stuff... gorgeous)

Lately I've been checking out these discs:

Ralph Bowen: Soul Propretior (John Swana on this disc is his usual amazing self!)

Tomasz Stanko: Suspended Night (absoulutely gorgeous and original!)

One for All: Live at Smoke (I finally met Jim Rotondi yesterday, he's one of the best trumpeters in the world!)

and then what else is on my Ipod ;)

Best,

T

Today...

OK,

It's period 1 in my honors physics class. My students are working diligently finishing up a project. I like to play jazz for them, often against their wishes, but I want to open their minds up a bit. I keep it quiet in the background.

Their listening to ...

John Coltrane Quartet

Ballads

with Mcoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones.

Man o man, this is great album!

The kids want me to play rap or the current pop/rock they're listenig to. I'm willing to be open minded, but NOT in my lab! I also believe, the more good jazz we can expose people to, even on a subliminal level, the better off they'll be.

After, this CD plays out, I'm putting the Giant Steps CD on.

I'm doing some heavy jams over the next two weeks, and I'm going to call some Coltrane tunes. I've got to review!

Peace, all!

Nick

I have been working on excerpts, so out come the recordings. I forgot how much I enjoyed Szell/Cleveland.....so musical and tight.

Schumann Symphony No. 2
Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Prokofiev Symphony No. 5

Not Szell:

Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade (NY Phil - Yuri Temirkanov)
Strauss - Four Last Songs (Arleen Auger/Previn/Vienna)
Stravinksy - Firebird (Minnesota - Eiji Oue)

To get my mind out of deep mode and into chill out mode:

Ani DiFranco - Anything - I have all of her albums and official bootlegs. (25 total) lately, I have been listening to "Knuckle Down".
Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young - "So Far"
Janis Joplin - "Love, Janis"
Radiohead - "OK Computer"
