I've been on a Freddie Hubbard kick lately; everything from his albums "Hub- Tones", "Red Clay", "Straight Life", and "First Light", to his sideman work with 'Trane, Oliver Nelson, and Herbie Hancock. He was absolutely the Juggernaut of jazz trumpet and I can damn near cry just to think that his chops declined.

Aside from Hub I've been listening to Sergio Mendes' current CD "Timeless" and Jeremy Pelt's "Identity".

This is such a great thread. It allows us to cross pollinate our experiences listening.
TrumpetDiva, I have Pam's record too. She is a fine player. Do you know her at all? We have done some gigs together. (We discovered that we grew up about five miles from each other in Rockland County.)
Wilmer, I couldn't survive without Phil Schaap, Shareef, et al. Bird Flight is indispensible.
This week, I have been listening to some Gordon Goodwin, and a lesser known album by Oliver Nelson, "Screamin the Blues." He did it before "Blues and the Abstract Truth," and it's like a prototype for that album. It features Dolphy and Nelson, and Richard Williams on Trumpet, plus Roy Hanes on Drums. Williams is an unsung hero of jazz. Someone mentioned Freddie, too. Some of my favorite work by him is on Blue and the Abstract Truth. If you don't have it, GET IT!!!!
I have also been listening to Dexter Gordon, "Go"

NickD has a spectacular aura about
Dinah Washington and Max Roach with...

OK, I've been entranced by the old live recording of Dinah Washington and Max Roach wth Maynard and Clifford!

First, Clifford is on fire and is venturing into the stratoshphere with aplomb to push Maynard!

Second, Maynard more than holds his own as a bop player next to Clifford on this! He is playing his butt off and is spectacular - even without the high notes!

Third, if you want to hear high notes, you've GOT to hear the ballad set on this record. Maynard plays Gershiwn's "Summertime" - first on the bottom of the horn and the up two octaves. This is one of the most dazzelling high note trumpet solos I've ever heard. Ferguson takes a potentially athletic event and makes sheer music out of it. It sounds like this is where trumpet is supposed to be played.

Hearing Brown and Ferguson on this recording is truly an inspiration, IMHO. Check it out.

FWIIW, coming from me!

Peace.

Nick

Clark no slouch???????

Clark no sluch? He has been one of my favorites since I was a kid! He's amazing!

OK, you've all got me dead to rights. A buddy of mine burned that CD for me. I had NOT had a chance to listen to it till I went on a couple of short driving outings with the family. Picking out MF and Clifford was all too easy. My buddy, didn't burn all of the tracks. I didn't know Clark was on there.

My plan, when someone does something like this is to go out and buy the CD once I've determined that I like the tracks. I was so excited about this that I posted before I could do so, so Chuck, you've got me redfaced on this. I'll let you know once I've made a run for the local Borders, but in the meantime, perhaps Trent can elucidate for us! Trent, ELUCIDATE all over everything!
