I think that maynard had a greater impact because he inspired so many more people. He has also brought a whole nother prospective to the way people view jazz trumpet playing. for example- if it weren't for maynard than trumpet players probably wouldn't be so obsessed with high notes. and maynard made a path for a lot of young trumpet players careers (carl fischer, Wayne Bergeron, Patrick Hession, Lynn Nicholson, Eric Mayashiro) just by having them play in his band and learn from him. he taught those trumpet players a LOT of what they know and now they are some of the greatest trumpet players in the world.

Huh? Miles has way more influence than Maynard. Miles influenced ALL jazz musicians while Maynard only influenced lead trumpet players. BTW, Maynard wasn't the first high note guy by any stretch of the imagination. I think he might get credit as the first band leader that is a high note player.

Sure Maynard inspired a lot of great lead players, but lets think of the great musicians that were inspired my Miles... Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, John Coltrane, Ron Carter and Chick Corea come to mind. With due respect to Patrick Hession et al, CASE CLOSED!!!
Frankly, I think the discussion here is between people who are judging trumpet players and those who are judging musicians. In my opinion, Miles was one of the greatest musicians ever. And he happened to be a trumpet player. Maynard is one of the greatest trumpet players ever, but how many people do you know outside of the trumpet community who get excited to hear that Maynard is coming to town (except the folks who own the local Indian restraunt). (Sorry about the cheap shot, couldn't resist). And I'm not ragging on him because I don't like trumpet players who spend a lot of time above the staff. Maurice Andre is an incredible musician. And he happens to play the trumpet. And he happens to spend a lot of time in the upper register. But first and foremost, like Miles, he is a great musician. Maynard is a great musician, but when I think of him, I don't think of great artistry, I think of high notes.
