7C and Buescher Duo Cup 99D

Have picked up the horn again after a long time. Only played for fun... 4'th thru college... But used a Bach 7C all that time. Picked up a used Buescher cornet for a few $ and it had a Duo Cup 99D. I seem to get better high range with it, than with the 7C. (Also have a 7C for cornet). Putting the 99D into the trumpet (yes it is loose and VERY sharp!) I get more high range, like with the cornet.

What is the difference 'tween these? I am looking for a step up for my trumpet, and don't know which way to go? There is a store an hour's drive from here that has a large variety that I can try on for size...

This is one of those $64 questions I know - so mostly I am wondering what the 99D is characteristically, to help direct my search.

On a previous note - my son (age 12) and I are fixing up a pair of Olds Ambassadors, and he likes the sound and playability (is that a word?) better than his rental Yamaha. Took one to school today. Will see what he says later. "His" is currently raw brass - the lacquer was in bad shape, and he likes it. Not sure what to do with the finish...

Thanks,
Bill

There is an adapter easily available for the cornet mouthpiece to be used in any trumpet for $10 (unless the price on these have gone up drasticly)

Re: 7C and Buescher Duo Cup 99D

The Buescher 88-D for the trumpet and 99-D for the cornet are the same size cup. The diameter of that cup is reasonably close to a Bach 10-1/2, so you might try a 10-1/2C or the equivalent Schilke or a dozen others. The rim is somewhat flattish, so that would be a factor to consider.

Something to note on the Buescher mouthpieces is that the high point of the rim is to the outside of the cup rather than the inside, so it might feel larger than it really is to you.

As an interesting aside, the cups were specified A, B, C, D, and E, where A was the deepest and E was the shallowest. They described the D, therefore, as medium shallow.

If you think the Duo-Cup feature is helping you out, then you might also want to try a Parduba 5, which should be about the same diameter and has the dual cup feature as well (though it's implemented a bit differently).

As for an adapter, normally a decent idea, but the Buescher 99-D is a short-shank piece and the intonation is likely to be goofy.

If you have any more questions about these pieces, which I use in my Buescher instruments, let me know and I'll try to answer them. Which cornet did you get, by the way? There's a model number at the bottom of the second valve casing.

Re: 7C and Buescher Duo Cup 99D

Wow - I'm looking at the Back Loyalist Mouthpiece guide: BachLoyalist.com - Mouthpiece Models (Trumpets)
and learning a bit. The different options are remarkable!

Looking at the Buescher - it is marked True Tone, s/n 332544, with LP and 257 stamped on the bottom of valve #2.

There is a good bit of denting in the rear of the bell section - next to the mpce, and some smaller ones elsewhere. The bottom springs are different - our other horns are Olds Ambassadors (2 trumpets, a cornet on the way), and a Reynolds Medalist in pretty nice shape.

This horn sounds quite good - considering I paid $2.50 + $25.00 for shipping. Even has a great case!

The added high register I got from the 99-D has me thinking about a similar trumpet mpce. A lot to study, and more to try!

Re: 7C and Buescher Duo Cup 99D

Ah! Your cornet is probably an Aristocrat. Not top of the line (that would be the 275 "The 400") but was still easily a professional cornet. It was made about 1949 or 1950.

In terms of quality, it will blow the doors off of any Ambassador, and perhaps the Reynolds as well.

However, every horn plays differently for each person. But, I might consider getting the dents pushed out and giving it a serious trial for either you or your son.

Here are pictures of the contemporary "The 400" models of trumpet (model 225) and cornet (model 275) for comparison purposes, and because I like to show the pictures.
