Re: Asymmetric opinion

I had one for about a week and hated it. That's just me though. I had high range and low range, just not mid range.

Re: Asymmetric opinion

The concept intrigues me, but, my embouchure is firmly established at about 2/3 upper to 1/3 lower with an Olds 7C, which is contrary to the makers directions. I play principal in a community concert band and a good bit of gospel music in various churches. In one of the community concert bands that I play in we have a guy third chair down from me who swears by his asymetric mouthpiece. I have never tried one, but, if Old Dave would loan me one of his for either trumpet or cornet, I would take good care of it and be happy to pay the postage to and fro.

Re: Asymmetric opinion

Well, I have tried an asymmetric mouthpiece and I didn't really like it too much. I didn't like the completely flat rim and the design was too foreign to me. But as far as your question about "cheating" goes, I don't believe there is such a thing. Just play the equipment that works for you. The only way I'll say you'd be cheating is if you put down your real horn and switch to one of these!

Dave Mickley did send me two Assymetric mouthpieces which I tried for two days extensively. My wife who is not musically trained or inclined told me that "something" was wrong with my tone, and, she asked why I was cracking so many notes. I then, switched back to my gold plated Olds 7C mouthpiece and her comments instantyly became complimentary. My take on this experience was that I did gain four full tones at the top of my range that were stolen from the bottom. My flexibility was virtually nil and accuracy of attack was much hindered.

I wish to publicly praise and thank Dave for the loan of his expensive mouthpieces, which I mailed back to him yesterday. My comment to him was that I thanked him for the loan, but, no thanks per ever owning an Assymetric mouthpiece.

Re: Asymmetric opinion

I've had my asymmetric for over a week now and I've practiced a lot, But I'm switching between the asymmetric and my 7c . Now I'm finding the tone and range using the 7c has improved alot in just a few days .

Re: Asymmetric opinion

The asymmetrics seem to be working pretty good for me. When I Played years ago, I was using a Bach 1 1/4 C. I decided this time around to try something different. Maybe it's my placement, but they were comfortable right from the start. The 3C was tough to play in the lower register at first, but is fine now. I have no trouble in the lower register when I use the Opera. I can't say much about endurance or upper register since I'm just starting out again. I have noticed the upper register I do have is more controlled and less work than in the old days though.
