![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording The only thing I've seen that could create a problem with a Recording was the joint where the leadpipe connects to the mouthpiece receiver. You normally will get a 'ridge' where the receiver fits over the leadpipe, that is what creates the MP gap on the horn. Certainly on my Recording(Jan '61) that ridge if very thin and was very difficult to measure when I was with Brian Scriver from GR getting out of mouthpiece Hell. I think I have seen other postings and discussions about this on Recordings. But on my Recording I have used Bach 1 1/2, 3, 5, 7, Monette B4 and now a GR 65.6 with NO problem. The best is the GR, but that is the same on all of my horns, it's the MP not the horn!

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Thanks for that Bill.......straight answer and not a tie in sight! It sounds as if my B2 will probably work as it does with my other horns. I was sure I had seen something about GR mouthpieces and Recordings but have not been able to find the thread. I was excited and looking forward to another horn for my small collection so I probably jumped the gun....the horn comes on Friday. Hopefully there will be no problems.....I am told it plays well and the pictures show it to be a fine example. Walter |

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording I'm using a GR with my Recording and it plays very well, but I had the gap adjusted to modern standards, which was a big improvement. The existing gap was on the order of nearly 1/2 an inch (!). This required a replacement receiver as the existing one could not be machined down enough to fix the gap and I didn't want my mouthpiece backbore lathed down on the outside to fit the horn.

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Well...the 67 Recording arrived today and I am thrilled!..It looks beautiful and is in almost new condition (I will eventually post a photograph in Vintage eye candy) and plays!!! I had no idea! I can see why so many people rave about them. Oh yeah ....the mouthpiece....well Rowuk....I won't have to play the wet noodle....my B2 is brilliant! Thanks for all your help fortunately all my anxieties about mouthpiece selection have evaporated....so it's only the horn that's going to be wailing! Walter |

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Walt got himself a new AXE! A '67 no less. Gosh, 40 years ago. Holy smokes where does the time fly? Way cool my friend. Hope your Taylor doesn't get nervous, you spending some time with an older but wiser gal When you've got time, give us a digest on sound differeces you detect between the two and how they play if you care to. If you throw in the Selmer Balanced Action into the mix, that would be a very worthwhile read for me. Enjoy! Richard |

congratulations! Now YOU are the expert for the next Olds "nervous before the wedding night" poster! The B2 is a pretty flexible mouthpiece. The only Bb horn of mine that it doesn't work on is a $200 pocket trumpet from China. I use a B2D prana for that. Can't wait to see your pictures!

![]() | Re: Best mouthpiece for Olds Recording Thanks guys...I have some unexpected first impressions! Without question the Recording and the Taylor are a very exciting mix for me. I can't put my finger on it yet but although they are very different in many ways there is something uncanny about the way they compliment each other. When I switched from one to the other for about an hour tonight I found that my playing improved on each horn. I seemed to have an enhanced appreciation of both horns...my Taylor felt better than ever and the Recording was just a delight to play. The Recording without question is female in comparison to the Taylor... a definate male....husky dark voice with lots of power and more chunky features. The Recording is beautiful and elegant in comparison...yes ...strong and dark in the lower register but bright and agile in the upper register with an amazing clarity of sound.(Just to make sure I was not mis-reading the clarity against the Taylor I did a quick check with my Bach....woofy socks come to mind here..lol ..I always thought my Bach was clear! ) The Recording is on the heavier side so the feel and difference weight-wise is not great...the valves are very free and easy with a slightly longer throw but not so much as to cause problems. I found the resistance abit stronger on the Recording but could adjust quickly as both are pretty free blowing...also the slot positions seemed in a similar position on each horn. There are sound similarities ...of course.......the B2,the Red Brass bell and my playing need to be taken into account. I am not an expert and never expected to be writing this stuff....I bought the Recording to add to my small collection of lovely horns...to play from time to time.....the match between the Recording and Taylor is so good that I will probably take both horns on some gigs to see if this all works out in practise. It should give me a much wider range of sound....time will show how well this will work but at the moment I have been totally surprised by how much I enjoyed swapping the horns back and forth. In the past swapping horns only worked when it was between the flugel and my main horn. Richard ...where the Selmer Balanced fits in I am not sure... it is certainly a great great horn but I know that I will always play it on its own....it is unique. Rowuk ...you seem to be prophetic! The wedding night seems to be for the Taylor and the Recording! Walter |
