Re: Best Slide Grease

I use the Schilke slide grease which has lanolin in it, it seems to work the best for me and my horns

I do not like vasoline because it is not thick enough for the tuning slide and 2nd valve slide and it is not viscous enough to keep the slided covered. Metal to metal contact means WEAR!
Anhydrous Lanolin for me too, plus a bit of Al Cass FAST oil for the 1st and 3rd slides. This mix works equally well for my Getzens, Boosey and Hawkes, and Weril instruments. One of the B&H tuning slides leaks a little water at times - this mix solves that drama with no expensive repairs required (the horn is 53 years old).

Re: Best Slide Grease

I use the Hetman oil and slide grease, but the ultra pure stuff works well too.

You will like it and if you don't, use it to soften your hands for your sweety. See, no waste of money, and it just might improve your love life. I see all of this as a big plus.

Re: Best Slide Grease

I use the Hetman "grease" (really more thick oil than grease) on 1st and 3rd and the Yamaha grease in the chapstik style container for tuning and 2nd. The hetman stuff is more expensiive that the lanolin though so when I run out, I'll try what the others have suggested.

YUP!! It surely does. My wife uses it instead of Chapstick on those days that she does not wear lipstick. That keeps her lips soft and I do love that. In my case, I don't have much of a problem with chapped lips, but, because I prefer not to wear gloves or mittens in our Michigan winters, my hands do take a beating and Bag Balm is my standard cure for that.

Re: Best Slide Grease

I'm intrigued by lanolin. And will give it a try-my wife has some, well, er... nipple salve from when she was breast feeding, which is mostlanolin. So far I've been a fan of Selmer slide grease. I have used a bit of Bagbalm in the past but don't remember how well it worked or if it diluted too easily from valve oil/condensation.

For my old cornet i'd like something that'll stay sticky and thick and not dilute. Any suggestions?

Re: Best Slide Grease

Geeez when I went to buy anhydrous lanolin at the store it was $20 for about 1 lb. This was the only size available. Now I fugure I have enough lanolin to lube my horn for the next 3 centuries.
Buy anything in small amounts. They're all about the same---sticky and greasy.
Zaja has perfumed grease---wow smelly grease, how wonderful.

Re: Best Slide Grease

I like Spacefiller, which is also lanolin based. It's a liquid, and you only need a tiny drop, so it lasts a really long time. Lanolin doesn't leave so much black stuff on clothes, which is great for me during whites season!
