| New Friend | I have a problem with recommending mouthpieces in a forum. None of us know if he has thin or thick lips, or something in between. And the only thing we really know about Bobby's mouthpieces is that they work for Bobby. A mouthpiece (or a horn for that matter) that has an artist's name on it doesn't necessarily mean you'll sound like that person if you buy it. I own one of MF's mouthpieces he gave me in the late 70s, but I'll be damned if I sound like him on it. (I don't think he liked it either. It was an experimental model from JetTone with a 17 throat. Talk about getting tired!) So, Flatterthan..., I'm guessing that you don't have a good music store in your area and that's why you're considering ordering the mouthpieces. However, if you do, or if you even have to drive a couple of hundred miles one weekend, you really need to take your horn and sit down in a practice room at the music store and play every brand they've got. And don't be fooled just because you can squeek something out on a super shallow piece. That's all its good for. Look at things that are slightly deeper than what you think you're going for. They will give you a bigger sound and allow you to play on and below the staff without readjusting. Good range comes from practicing range building exercises. Quick fixes, particularly on mouthpieces, are rarely satisfying.
