If your teacher's piece is a stock mouthpiece / no alterations - simply order another like it.

And if it has any modifications, ask him what those are, then have that done to the new piece.

This will surely cost less than having a copy made.

You simply asked a wrong question.:)

Re: Copying Mouthpieces

I would agree that Kanstul would be a good choice. They use digital scanner to make an exact copy. Greg Black and some of the other mouthpiece makers may do a good job, but they do it "by hand". or eyeballing, so to speak. This is just one experience but I had Greg Black try and copy a Jet Tone rim for me and it wasn't close. But I don't think the price I'm seeing mentioned of $150 from Kanstul is correct (probably was at one time). I recently inquired to Kanstul about copying a friends Cat Anderson mouthpiece (a mouthpiece owned by Cat, with a pin hole throat and about as shallow as a dime-- amazing!) and I can't remember exactly-- but the total price involved was more like $250-300 after paying for the scan and then the mouthpiece itself.

Re: Copying Mouthpieces

I am always wary of "copies" as it is essentially impossible to get the backbore completely right. That may be of little significance on a big Bb, but a picc ist so sensitive to any deviation, I wouldn't do it. I would find a current standard model that works as well.

Re: Copying Mouthpieces

Mr Black makes great mouthpieces, he just doesn't reply to any emails pr phone calls.
Kanstul is an excellent mouthpiece copier and has excellent customer service. But by far the highest quality is Stork. HIgh quality, great customer service and evaluation. I would put Reeves in there as well but his prices have followed the price of a barrel of oil.

Re: Copying Mouthpieces

Kanstul does not charge for scanning a piece, and they can also scan back bores. I've seen Jim New, their mpc guy, work the machine, and it's pretty amazing. He can set the sensitivity of the machine so high it could take a week to scan a piece. Practicality has it to where he sets it to take 20 - 30 minutes to scan.

Their price for making a mpc from a scan is $250 for the 1st, $125 for each after that. I do not know if that $125 price is good for orders made at the same time or if there is time between orders.

Anyone with questions should call Kanstul, toll free - 888.KANSTUL

Cool, I was thinking of going on a mouthpiece safari so maybe I will send him a smoke signal.

Re: Copying Mouthpieces

The late, great, Arthur Benade, before becoming Monette's tame acousitican, did a lot of fooling around with backbores at Bell Labs; acoustical duals and such, and backbores make a huge difference in how a mouthpiece plays. That is why Dave scrapes.

Volume makes more of a difference than shape, and given enough mouthpieces and cutting tools, we can all create the perfect mouthpiece.

Practicing on the mouthpiece we have works pretty well, too.
