I'm so proud of myself for not mentioning Warburton mouthpieces...
Umm ... like you didn't mention WARBURTON or anything

Both of those mouthpieces seem quite small for real legit work. So I agree, you may need to look. Cheap alternatives to try are Faxx mouthpieces and of course the Kelly mouthpieces. You could try a 3C or a 1 or 1 1/2 C.

If you need them right away, I have several very good used ones plus the Kelly line, Fokus line, and Rudy Muck line. I would be happy to send you a couple on approval to see if size is the thing. PM me if that would help.

I have never been too fond of Warburton mouthpieces. At one point I was "fitted" with a Warburton mouthpiece and I never really cared for it. I went back to using my Marcinkiewicz.

As for those mouthpieces being small, neither of those mouthpieces are small and in fact, I've been told by many that the Holbert piece is downright large for a lead piece. The 5C cup is great, but as I've said before, it's just a bit too narrow.

In the end, size really has little to do with it, just so long as you have a good sound for it.

I was thinking of trying a Stork Vacchiano mouthpiece. Any thoughts about those?

I have played several Storks (I had one in stock until last week). They are very well made, very comfortable. The Storks know what they are doing. Like Vincent Bach when he first got started, they make custom pieces and then started making pieces that seemed to "shake" out a common sizes.

They are in stock at most of the major retailers, so they wouldn't take a long time to get. IMO, that is not a bad place to start.

Curry 5C

HI Patrick,

I have almost the same problem, my best all-round mpc is a CUrry 5C, full sound, warm, dark, and easy register. But the rim is terrible for me, the bit is too sharp (but i stay on it because is the sound i like, trumpet is terrible). I did a big safari, GR 65emx, Laskey 60b, Bach 3b, Bob reeves 42b, Curry 3b, Monette b4 and always i go back to my Curry 5C because the sound is better.

Do you have any experience with a Monette B6, i heard the rim is pretty good, meduim bite and a size between 3 and 5, but i don't know if the cup is deep like a 5C or shallow like a 3C ?

Also did you tried a Fokus?

If you find something let me know.

Stef

The only "Monette" mouthpiece that I'm EVER likely to buy is going to be a Kanstul copy. Even if I sounded awesome on one, I wouldn't buy one simply because I don't like the whole attitude behind both Monette horns and mouthpieces.

I have an assortment of Stork mouthpieces coming to me from Phillis Stork that she is putting together based on a conversation we had about it over the telephone. Hopefully there will be something there that works well.

Phillis knows her stuff. Stork makes a very good mouthpiece -- you may very well find something you like. I played a Stork for years until I changed horns and moved in a different direction.
