Re: Dropped mutes during performances

I turn my bell around and breath condensation into it and then insert the mute. The condensation gives the cork enough moisture without having to lick it.

Maybe she could Velcro the inside of her bell and the mute(s). Magnets? Maple syrup?

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

I fog the bell. Good advice on licking the corks. I'll do that next time.

In "The Secret Garden" there is a lot of Harmon. My harmon is very old and kept coming out during rehearsals. I decided to buy a new Harmon for the show. It stuck well.

The trombone player sits next to me. On one song the lady is singing the final notes and the trombone plays a "naked" solo fanfare to end the song. It was his big chance his senior year. He stuffs in the mute, brings up his horn, the soloist sings, and the mute solo to the floor occurs. He plays the fanfare while the mute rattles on the floor. For that moment, he was the star of the show.

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

Pedal C - the sanding didn't cause the falling out. That was a hope to cure this lady's issue with dropping mutes and to make them fit into her horn properly and play in tune. I thought the corks being too large kept them from being able to get enough contact (ie only the ends inserted first were actually touching the bell).
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

You know, I don't believe I have that problem. I usually put my mutes in pretty securely, as there is a red stripe on the inside of the bell where my red and white straight mute has been inserted. :)

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

I fog the bell or just hold the mute in if its a short passage. It's always worked for me.

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

Uhhh, I didn't screw my tuning-bell down tightly enough once, and had a quick mute change. It wasn't a pretty sight. My instrument did sound muted, though.

Re: Dropped mutes during performances

With my pocket trumpet, have stuck some velcro to sections of the bell, and my joral copper bubble mute has a ring of velcro on the end of the mute. That works so well, I can jump on the bar and do all kind of dancing with the horn, without worries that the mute will fall off.

Hi Solar Bell, and for your poll, I fog the horn for all muste except the harmon and this one I lick, so put me down for both fogging and licking.
