Re: Flugel mouthpiece on a trumpet - good/bad?

Some players use a flugel mouthpiece on the trumpet for those "Walking on Eggs" moments in the symphonic repertoire.

The 10 different models are different rim sizes, check out the measurements and find one that is similar to what you play or send an email to Mark Curry and ask him which rim is closest to your rim size.

For reference, the Monette B2 rim is about the same size as the Bach 1 1/4 or a Schilke 18. The Monette B2FL mouthpiece does an awesome job when you need mellow, but it will never be a flugel sound. You need to save up!

Re: Flugel mouthpiece on a trumpet - good/bad?

I would not spend $165 on a mpc in hopes of getting a flugel sound out of a trumpet.... Mutes seem to have much more profound impact on tone than mpc and are way cheaper.

If you are patient, $165 is about half-way toward a pretty decent (but perhaps no-name brand) older flugel. I got a Steenhuysen flugel (c. 1930s?) off ebay for about $300. I have yet to hear a mpc that takes a trumpet tone much past "cornetty" in terms of mellow tone. Who knows... if you play a little on a real fllugel, you may decide there is no turning back and upgrade like I did. :^)

If you do go the mpc route... make sure it is the right taper. I am guessing standard (yamaha?) taper might fit, but my Bach flugel mpc (which has the Bach taper) rattles around in the receiver. I'd sure hate to spend $165 on a mpc that doesn't even fit ;^)

I was just going to post this same advice. This only costs about $30, plus, you get to drink it! And it is a more mellowing device than any trumpet mouthpiece...

Except...I think it is Bob Reeves that makes a mouthpiece that will actually make your trumpet sound like a flugelhorn. I've tried it, it does what is promised, and I can't imagine a cheaper alternative to actually purchasing a Flugel. It freaked me out--it's not a "dark" trumpet mouthpiece. It is a whole different animal. It is designed to actually help you substitute a trumpet for a flugel.

That's great info... I am truly shocked that there is a mpc that can actually do that to a trumpet! I still prefer just having a real flugel ;^)

If you don't do spirits... someone is selling pairs of crown royal bags on ebay for like $0.99. Shows up when you do a search for "flugel".

Re: Flugel mouthpiece on a trumpet - good/bad?

I tired playing a bob reeves c2j mouthpiece on my bach strad and was really surprised on the flugel-like sound. I am going to get one once I save up the $125 it costs. I am also looking at a Blessing 155 4-valve flugehorn. I will post on the horn forum for any feedback on this horn. Thanks for all the advice...
