Question GUYS, I found this weird pre-harmon MUTE on eBay...

There is this weird mute on eBay and I want to know more about it. I know nothing about it and apparantly the seller doesn't either. I want to know if this auction is the ONLY time I'll be able to find it or not. Here is the link to it:
Unusual Antique Pre-Harmon Trumpet/ Cornet Mute - eBay (item 270202307203 end time Jan-20-08 19:31:00 PST)

If you could drop me a link of something about the research about it that would be great. I wouldn't know where to do my research on it. I don't know how much it is worth, but considering that this is the only current time to buy it ANYWHERE on the internet (at least to my knowledge), I have a feeling this mute will bring hundreds, which I can't afford. Please share with me anything you know about this mute. Thanks.

It looks like a plain ol' nickel plate trumpet or cornet bell, with of course some cork stuck on it. Don't throw money away, buy a jo-ral.

eVilBay strikes again .... yeah looks like someone put some cork around an old bell .... maybe to get a "resonator" effect or something.

Meanwhile your local music or pawn shop, swapmeet, music school etc has a zoo of interesting mutes lying around ....

Wow, now that you mention it, it does look like a bell, exactly like a bell. Thanks for the advice on the mute, now I won't be spending some money on what I thought was an antique treasure. I'll still watch the auction, it'll probably bring a fortune, and others won't realize that it's just a guy making a mute out of a bell. Thanks.

it may well be a hacked off bell with cork on it, but if you scroll down on the pics it clearly shows that it has a closed off end with a hole in the middle, which definitely constitute a mute not just a bell stuck inside your bell...

It looks like an old practice mute. The sound output would be too small for on stage unless the brass was amplified.

Omelet I think you should spend hard earned money on this monstrosity and write a review for us to read. After all, a good practice mute is worth its weight in gold... or silverplate.

I love the comment listed below in the Q&A. area.

Q: Anything engraved on this weapon?

Looks like this guy thinks it's a lopped off bell too.
