![]() | The silent brass will make things very quiet and you can practice anywhere. For me I'd rather just buzz my mouthpiece if I can't play. I think for me practicing with the SB does more harm than good. I have heard the guys at Bob Reeves have a new practice mute? That might be something to look into before you go with silent brass. |

![]() | I am curious re: "Silent-Brass" system, myself. I tried a "practice" mute and I hate it ... but, it was reasonable in price. Maybe the BOSE Corporation will get around to this issue someday ... probably will be great, but expensive .... Robert Rowe |

![]() | I have one of the original Silent Brass mutes but have used it maybe an hour tops, just didn't care for it. I know several local guys who use the mute alone right before a gig to warm up on. It is very quiet and the stuffines cuts down their warm up time. old geezer Dave

| Mezzo Forte User | I have one, and I don't like it. It's not very comfortable to play on. Lara

![]() | at this site: http://www.dallasmusic.org/gearhead/...ce%20Mute.html you will find directions to make a Practice mute for a couple bucks, I made one, it cuts down on the sound so you can play just about anywhere but the resistance is really discouraging, I don't use it very often, the site also contains a link to a site that has directions to make it play in tune and turn it into a homemade silentbrass system so that you can plug headphones into the mute and hear a sound closer to that of the trumpet without a mute, I haven't done that yet, but if you take it to a You-do-it electronics type store they should be able to show you what to do, it doesn't look too complicated or you can just go to dallasmusic.org which is a great site, and you'll find the directions for the practice mute pretty quick

![]() | I tried once my teacher's silent brass system which was connected to the cd-player.. It was fun to hear your own playing "in cd" although i didn't like the resistance and sound wasn't really good.. It was nice experience along others but I wouldn't buy it.

![]() | I owned a Silent Brass system for a couple of years and didn't like it at all. I was very happy when I finally sold it! I didn't like the resistance, the sound, and having wires hooked up to me like I was an intensive care patient at the hospital. I would also recommend finding another alternative for quiet practice. Something that has worked well for me is using a Denis Wick adjustable cup mute with the cup brought in very close to the bell. Doing this effectively converts the cup mute into an effective practice mute. Kevin Hilman |
