Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

Isn't it curious how far we will go to find the "perfect" solution to our "unique" situations? How unique is your friend? I think Robocop uses STP.

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

Look, (a) the guy's kind of an idiot. (b) MM oil is all he had around. (c) the dude's not even practicing - I can't even get him to play on the mouthpiece. (d) This is pretty much ending my hopes to have him at least doing "backing" or "rhythm" or whatever it's called. Um, (e) maybe if I had the bux to get a trombone (I know where there's a cheap one downtown) he'd play that, but I don't have that kind of bux and there's an air rifle I have my eye on first.

(z) I put this subject in just because I thought it'd be pretty funny seeing the reactions to someone actually using MM oil on their horn. But frankly, we all know it's stupid. Use regular trumpet oil. We new return you to your regularly scheduled programming! ~~~~~~

So much fun, what about olive oil? That would eliminate the danger of ingesting anything. Why would you have to finance your friends trombone?

Depending on your eating habits, a nice mediterranean sauce could be flushed out every once in a while.

Maybe we just need to define what is suitable for continuous use and what can be used in an emergency.

To be fast, the oil must be very thin, to be safe it must be made suitable for use in situations with direct body contact. If there are any warnings about contact with skin do not use the stuff. Remember, your lips get sore after playing and contact with irritants could slow your development down!

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

So, here we have the safety info on this stuff:

http://www.myerstiresupply.com/MSDS/...Marvel_Oil.pdf

There seems to be some serious restrictions on this stuff pertaining to skin and inhalation. I do not oil my valves using chemically resistant gloves!

DON'T USE THIS STUFF FOT NORMAL PLAYING. For repairs, where the horn is cleaned afterwards, it is probably OK.

Re: Is Marvel Mystery Oil ok for valves?

Marvel Mystery Oil makes a machine oil that is sold in 12oz bottles and is available most hardware or auto parts stores. I've used this product for several years on my 3rd and 1st slides. It is the perfect consistency and works better than anything else I've used. I put it in an old valve oil bottle and a couple of drops on each slide is all it takes. Most slide greases make the slides too stiff unless thined by valve oil. The only draw back, it is red just like that which is for the crankcase so you have to be careful not to get any on light colored clothing.

It is too heavy however for valves!!!
