Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

My high school director gave everyone one megatones and made us play on them. Its kind of like sticking a tone intensifier on which my middle school band director made us do. But I never really liked the megatone. A great trumpet player around the southeast named Ken Watters plays on a megatone. He sounds fantastic. I don't know exactly why he uses it but I would guess it would be to get a darker sound. But if you are thinking of getting one, make sure and try one out first. It is such a personal choice.

I have found the ignore list to be an invaluable aid to my enjoyment of this list. Usually I use the "three strikes" criteria, but some extraordinany examples only need two.

Looks like this thread is slowing down a little. Thanks to everyone who gave me their advice. Sometimes another perspective can be extremely helpful.

Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

Hi, Ozboy,

Should you make a purchase of a Bach Megatone, or am able to test one for yourself, will you report to TM what you experience?

All the reviews about Bach Megatone, postive, negative, or indifferent are helpful. Each player will have his/her own opinion how they work for them?

It will be only be in the personal playing of the Bach Megatone that you will truly know how it works for you, your instrument and your style of playing? Playing and choosing a mouthpiece is a subjective experience.

I realize that you do not want non-Megatone contributors to say anything, but two paragraphs above will still tell the "tale" as to what works for you?

Best wishes!

Lloyd

Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

I have been using the Bach Megatone 3c, and I love it...I do cheat however with a standard 7c when my chops get exhausted, but I am going to keep blowin' that thing until my chops get to where I want them to be...The tone is very sweet for sure..

Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

Hello ozboy, I am a comeback player and use a 5c megatone. I love the way it sounds. I have also added curry ccaps to my trumpet and it darkens it up quite a bit.

The mouthpiece isn't any harder to use due to breath requirements. I realize that my limited experience has some skeptical about my ability to recognize a difference. However it has helped my sound a lot and is comfortable to play.

I hope this helps.

Why does everybody attack each other on this site across the posts. There should be no attitude here at all, just insight and helpful conversation.

Hi, uapiper,

You said:

I've often wondered the same thing. Musicians have their particular (and peculiar) ways. Maybe they don't get enough sleep.

Best wishes!

Lloyd

Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

I still have and used to play on a dark, orchestral and classical sounding Bach 1 megatone mouthpiece when I was in graduate music school. It got played for my graduate recital and military band auditions. It now goes well with my dark sounding Schilke B3, which was played by Herseth. Before I purchased the mouthpiece, I compared it side by side several times to the standard Bach 1 and the megatone seemed to just help me sound better. After I started playing it, my teacher and other musicians commented on the improved sound. Maybe the heavier mass in the mouthpiece later influenced my decision to try out Monette mouthpieces and stick with them. All I can say is that the Bach 1 megatone worked for me but I still like the standard mouthpieces too. I hope that this helps! Just try both and do a comparison.

Re: Megatone mouthpieces-Who plays them?

Well, as for the comment on the first page about some great players play them and some awful, I'm an awful one.LOL No, but I really like the feel of my megatone 3C especially when switching from my high dollar bone mpc. I like the feel of it and get a pretty good sound, Although I'm about to take a Stomvi convertible kit for a test drive.
