![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Mouthpiece Speaking of sound, the original question has to do with getting the two "L" sounds--"lead" and "legit" using different mouthpieces. We've established that players play a huge role. Charlie Davis was mentioned as getting a great "lead" sound out of a "legit" mouthpiece, and I'll throw in Timofei Dokschitzer as one getting a great "legit" sound out of a "lead" mouthpiece (Bach 7E). So said, the first Vulgano postulate: Sound is a function of style. We deal with two distinct styles: Idiomatic and Idiosyncratic: idiomatic refering to the style of the music (down to the individual piece and individual group playing it) and idiosyncratic refering to personal style. This personal style is largely made up of our influences. I like Bill Chase's lead style. I like Maynard and Jon Faddis and Snooky and Tony too, but it was Chase that I listened to over and over and over again. In so doing, I got my personal (default) lead style from Chase. Likewise, my default sound concept is from Gerald Webster, my idea of "pretty" from Larry Jess, Scott Mather and Gil Johnson, my ideal of orchestral phrasing from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. (I also listened to a lot of Don Ellis and Herb Alpert, and these guys will pop up in my playing, usually in pieces they don't belong.) Do I really sound like any of my influences? No, not really. I sound like me, and the me I sound like comes from this unique "genetic mix." I sound like me on a Schilke 6A4a, and although I loved Chase's sound on the same mouthpiece, my "me" sound is real ugly on that mouthpiece. Choosing mouthpieces, therefore, is a very personal thing. The best mouthpiece will fit us physically and mentally, and will bring out our trumpet's voice, and no one can tell in advance what that mouthpiece will be. So, to answer BamaBoy's question: The 1C Megatone is considered a "big time" orchestral kind of mouthpiece. A shallower cupped mouthpiece will help facilitate your lead sound, and a deeper mouthpiece will tend to darken things up. The real key though, is your sound concept. That is why we practice--to make the sound we hear in our heads out the bell and into reality. Teachers can be a huge help, but the true answers lie in our own imaginations. Have fun!

Sure, if I had 12 hours a day to practice, I bet I could do it on a 3c too. But I don't, so I use the right tool for the job. I'm still in school and still learning, but I knew Bach pieces weren't for me. I have had very good luck with GR, email them and Brian can give you recommendations from their questionaire. | |

![]() | Re: Mouthpiece Mouthpieces, like trumpets, are more of a "garbage in, garbage out" deal. Lots of great players play Dave's mouthpieces. Mouthpieces usually just sit there until we make them do something.

![]() | Re: Mouthpiece Now, now...play nice boys! I've said it before, if there was ONE end all, be all mouthpiece or trumpet- every pro would be playing it. It just aint so...players have their preferences, so what! Whatever works for you doesn't mean another company is garbage. Which is better- Chevy or Ford? Who cares... |

![]() | Re: Mouthpiece It's not weather it works for me or you. It's the way you post about how bad it is. It makes the discussion about you and your feelings and not the mouthpiece. Usually people are polite even when they don't like the product. To say it makes one sound bad is just mean spirited. |
