Since we have been taking over someone else's thread on this, and there seems to be a lot of discussion on it, why don't we start a new thread so jazz9 doesn't have to check and see odd stuff in his question about which mouthpiece to get

Whenever I've played, I've noticed a difference in where the numbers and name are in relation to the horn (i keep both my mouthpieces with the numbers at about 10 o'clock on the horn) sweet spot

i put the mouthpiece in the same way every time... but i think that has much more to do with the obsessive-compulsive side of my nature than any tonal qualities

except for very few mouthpieces like an assymetrical or wedge, mouthpieces are made perfectly round and therefore have no acoustical reason to be orientated.

Trumpet players are supreme in self deception, so if you notice a difference, welcome to the crowd. The advantage to lying to your self is that it is easy to fix a problem with another lie. If we knew the truth and something went wrong, we would have a REAL problem................

I too am picky about inserting my mouthpiece in the instrument--always the small end first!

I used to use a Laskey mpc that had the throat bored out by hand. You could see where the silver was gone and you could see that it was not quite symmetrical. I fooled around with trying to find it's "sweet spot," but I always felt like my own inconsistancy was way worse than the mouthpiece's. I put it in the same way for a long time and still had good days and bad days. Then I stopped caring about it's position and still had good and bad days.

I think that some mouthpieces probably do play better in a particular position, but I've never felt like I could find it.

I never gave this theory any merit until I was in a masterclass with Ingrid Jensen and Terell Stafford, and both said they have a "sweet spot" position for their mouthpiece. They said Bach mouthpieces were made to be inserted with the number facing the bell crook. Since then I have always inserted my mouthpiece the same way.

Do I play better? Probably not. Does it make me feel more secure. Yes!

Placebos can be as effective as cures. ;)
