![]() | Straight mutes Tom Crown - copper bottom (this is my favourite -esp for classical) Harmon alluminium (hardly use it - not great!) H and B Bach black plastic Hickman's Sotto Voce - this is a lovely quiet mute. Cups Denis Wick adjustable cup - fave for classical/Brass band style H and B - use for Big Band and shows Harmon Harmon alluminium! - I like the weight and the sound, although I have to be careful with the intonation - it has lots and lots of dents and I am sure that it plays better for this Practice Denis Wick - don't use it much though - I like to practise without a mute and only use a mute when the piece says to! I keep them all in Crown Royal Bags, and have occasionaly experimented using the Crown Royal Bag as a mute! Graham. |

![]() | Wow! You all have quite an arsenal of mutes there. My shortlist is as follows: Tom Crown beryllium copper bottom straight mute Stoneline straight mute Hickman Sotto Voce straight mute (so pretty and so delicate) Stoneline cup mute Alessi/Vacchiano/LeBlanc (whatever the brand is) aluminum harmon w/ stem Yamaha Silent Brass practice mute (RIP) Rubber plunger (forgot that those things do deteriorate over time...) ...and only two French Horn mutes thusfar: Tom Crown stop mute Stoneline straight mute There are some beautiful wood FH mutes by Ion Balu (at http://www.ionbalu.com). I would hate to have anything happen to them (were I to pick up one). Maybe someday, I shall own one...(next paycheck??) Liz

![]() | Mute Collection I had to do a list for insurance purposes and included mute list along with the instrument list. Got depressed when I realized the total on mutes equalled a medium priced horn! I don't use most of them but it is like a CD collection. Even if you don't listen to every one often, it's nice to know you can when desired and they will be at your finger tips. Bill Dishman Gainesville, Florida |
