Re: Mutes

I think I must have about 7 different straight mutes, but the ones I go to for the majority of work are:

Jo-Ral Brass bottom (for just about anything I need a straight mute on)
Denis Wick Straight (when everyone else in the section has it and we want a consistent muted sound)
Montreal Mute (for the soft straight mute stuff like Fetes & the end of the Enesco Legende, etc.)

H & B Mic-a-Mute for the cup. I have a regular H & B cup that I really like too, but I rarely use it nowadays.

Jo-Ral bubble for the Harmon stuff. One of my friends has the Best Brass Harmon, and that thing is phenomenal. I just need to save up some money and get the darn thing.

For the straight muted piccolo stuff, I have a copper bottom Jo-Ral. I used to use an all-aluminum crown mute on my P5-4, but the copper Jo-Ral is much better.

I'm also a firm believer that we should have a variety of mutes for the job, and that I'm also very into having everyone playing the same kind of mute when it's a muted section part. It seems a lot easier to have the tonal colors match up when everyone's using the same thing.
