![]() | This is a copy of my post on the Wynton site, and i figured it would make sense to just put it here, since most of you know what you're talking about... I am currently playing on the (literal) gold standard of mouthpieces, the Bach 3C, but am looking to get a new mouthpiece that can help brighten my sound, since i play on a dark sounding horn. The Cannonball 725, ML Bore, [Link to My Horn] but it is black nickel plated and has too dark a tone for big band work. I need a mouthpiece that will help brighten and penetrate through the ensemble, but not necessarily a lead mpc. I have thought about a 3D or a Schilke equivalent, and Monette is just too pricey... (sorry Dave) So as of now i have no real direction to go in, except the 3D thanks for your feedback

EM- I've never played a Cannonball trumpet, but there really shouldn't be any reason why you can't get a bright sound on a 3C. Equipment doesn't enable you to do things, it makes doing things easier. I like a big, dark sound, and I can get the sound I want on a Bach 7C. The reason I play a large Monette mouthpiece is because I don't have to put nearly as much effort into getting that sound. There are a lot of things you can do conceptually to brighten up your sound. Thinking about quickening your airstream is probably the best one I can give you. Listening and getting the right sound in your head is also key. When you finally get the sound you're looking for, then go shopping for a mouthpiece that will make obtaining that sound easier. -Jimi

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Quick Question Have you tried your 3C on other horns to test if the horn is too dark, or if your sound is too dark? I agree with Jimi about the air speed thing--there are plenty of monster jazz players that use a 3C, and it may be your technique that is at fault. Good chops can provide plenty of sizzle, and please remember that power comes from the player, and not the mouthpiece.

If your lips protrude into the cup, they could bottom out with a shallower mouthpiece. In your case, I would try to get to a music store that stocks mouthpieces and try some things out: 3D, Schilke 14B would be a start.
