 | Round crooks and heavy caps I just bought a Jupiter Tribune XO professional series trumpet (great horn by the way) and they gave me a bunch of extras along with it. These included another, more rounded crook and heavier valve bottom caps. I was just wondering what is supposed to be the benefit of having either of those things on the trumpet opposed to all the normal equipment? P.S.- This is completely off topic but I thought I might as well bring it up. I'll also probably be looking for new mutes and a new mouthpiece soon so if anybody has any good ideas on those that would be great! Thanks! |

| Re: Round crooks and heavy caps Some folks like the heavy caps and say it improves slotting. Some will only put weighted cap(s) on the 3rd valve. The rounded vs square slide on my horn changes the feel of the horn. Rounded feels more open with less resistance. Try the various combinations and see what you like. You may find you like a certain setup better for jazz and a different set of options for classical.

The heavy caps can improve slotting, especially when combined with an O-ring (you can search TM for the trhead about o-rings), but it is a matter of personal taste. I use heavy caps on my Schilke E-3L Eb trumpet, but not on my Schilke Bb. The Round vs. Square debate is an ongoing one here at TM, so feel free to read and play and decide for yourself, and then share your discoveries. Have fun!

 | Re: Round crooks and heavy caps JMANA3. You have the axe. Play it and tell US what you notice. Take it into a big room with a friend. Play to them across the room WITHOUT telling them which caps or slide you are using. The results will surprise many! I would not recommend switching mouthpieces until you are used to the horn, that means 6 months at least!
