Re: Second Mouthpiece advice

Dale gave you such great information, I'll throw in my humble little two cents on what I've found (that's the joy of mouthpieces, everyone's sound and response with them is ):

The deeper the cup, the more mellow the tone.

The more shallow the cup, the brighter the tone (sometimes sounds thinner).

Flat rim: more endurance, less flexibility (in lip slurs, etc.)

wide rim: more endurance. again, less flexibility.

Sharp rim: more flexibility, less endurance.

Narrow rim: more flexibility, less endurance.

But don't think a mouthpiece is an end-all be-all, YOU are the one that makes it work, the mouthpiece is simply fine tuning.

FWIW,
Steve

Re: Second Mouthpiece advice

Hello Chananel. I hope the rest of the fellows do not mind me reposting this over and over. But this subject just keeps coming up over and over, starting with a bunch of my past mouthpiece safari questions. After all the buying,I basically ended right back where I started. With a lot of mouthpiece savy, and a lot less money.HaHa I would recommend that you go to the Stork mouthpiece internet site. Get you a hand held mirror and then study, compare and match up your type lips with the Storks Lip types to mouthpiece size Charts. This will get you in the right size mouthpiece ball park. If you are having no problems with the Bach 3C and the Charts show you are in that range. I would not change. If you need to downsize some, the Bach 5C and Bach 7C will have a deeper C cup that can give a little darker sound close to the B cups, but still nice and bright in the upper register. I believe The Storks have just took two weeks vaction. Would not hurt to call them and discuss what you are trying to tell us. They are very nice and helpful Professionals. Did not have time to read through this Topic, so pray this helps. Good luck and try to avoid a mouthpiece safari. Can be a big waste of practice time and money etc.

For hacks like me, GREAT advice.

Your chops will adjust over time to what you are using. My lousy 1 cent is go for sound and let the practice room do what it can for everything else.

3 - 7 diameters have a lot going for them regardless of who makes them.

If you are a trumpet playing beast, ignore entirely what I wrote.

Re: Second Mouthpiece advice

I havent been playing trumpet professionaly for very long. But heres my advice for you. You ALWAYS need a 7c of ANY kind for normal playing. If your getting into Monettes I cant help you. But I have a Strad 37. And I feel I get the best tone quality with a Bach 7c. But ive currently gotten a Bach 3d, its better for the notes above the ledger lines. But otherwise. If your looking for a rich tone 11d. If you just wanna play for the fun of it, 7c-9c. But Ive only been playing pro for 1 year.
