Solved my age old mouthpeice dilemma

Bach in high school, I always performed best on a Bach 1-1/2C, across all walks of trumpet playing. The only technical thing that bothered be was that I could never "find" the perfect lead mouthpiece to use in conjunction with the 1-1/2C. This led to me straying for years across various mouthpiece combinations, which ultimately routinely hurt my playing, and eventually I gave trumpet up altogether out of frustration, sans an occassional gig twice a year. Recently, I've acquired a gig and started doubling on trumpet, and I saw my now tarnished, banged up 1-1/2C sitting where it sat for years. I decided to blow it again, and to my surprise, my playing felt very natural. The gig I'm playing now is a funk / acid-jazz jam type gig, and even now having reclaimed most of my chops, the 1-1/2C becomes cumbersome playing 20 minute solos at a time, and playing three and four ledger lines above the staff on occassion within those solos. So, I started looking for a lead mouthpiece again, not neccessarily for lead trumpet, but just to ease the burden.

Finally, I found what I was looking for. I recalled awhile ago seeing on the Kanstul mouthpiece comparator that the Bach 3D actually had a fairly close rim to the Bach 1-1/2C, so I ordered one from WWBW, it arrived today, and testing it at least for a short time, it's the mouthpiece I've been looking for since first switching to a 1-1/2C 7 years ago. Finally, after all these years, I can quit thinking about the horn and just focus on playing the music when these gigs roll around.

I haven't been around the forums for awhile, and I don't know what's changed in the trumpet community, but I thought I'd pass that along that the best things sometimes happen years after you want them to, but when they happen, appreciate them. I'll be hauling this setup to the next gig this Thursday, so I'll report back.

The 3D is an excellent choice.

If you want some sizzle get a 15A4a to go with it. Check the Kanstul compariter and you will see why I tried the 15A4a.

I don't use my 15A4a because it stuffs me up high but you may find it worthy. Everybody is different.

Re: Solved my age old mouthpeice dilemma

I got to use the setup this past week on a couple of gigs, and it worked great. Having chops on the last song always helps.

It is strange, somehow.....we'll search years for the Holy Grail and then find it after we've given up all hope, proving the value of "sticktoitiveness" and detachment.

I'm going to go play with my O-rings now.

Or... you could learn to become a master with the equipment you've got. I.E., Arturo plays his 3C for everything.
