I no longer use Al Cass as it only lubricates for about 12 hours then the lubricating stuff has evaporated.
Thats good to know. I use Al Cass and have been thinking there was something wrong with my trumpet since the valves stick the day after I oil it.

I'm thinking that may have more to do with the valve casing needing to be cleaned...
the real worry with evaporation is wear on the valves
I can't really say since i have no idea what you do to your horn

Oil daily before playing until it is gone. There is nothing wrong with Al Cass, you just have to use it correctly - and often enough!

Thanks Robin,
I've just gently relapped the valves on my Weril with a toothpaste mix and now the Al Cass works well - keeping the Getzen clean and oiled is a priority and as I bought my Al Cass as a bulk lot, the amount used is of little consequence, so frequent pre-oiling is the mantra.
Regards,

Re: Valve Oil

That's funny Ted, I recently did the same thing on the used Getzen I bought (each valve had one or two dark spots of corrosion, I assume, and I worked it down with a little bit of toothpaste). The horn works like a champ now with no sticking at all.

Robin's right on the Al Cass. It does seem to go quickly.

Re: Valve Oil

I used to use Al Cass for decades but then got a horn with tight valves. I now use Space Filler ultimate II. It's a synthetic and super slippery. It seems much longer lasting than Al Cass too!

Re: Valve Oil

Ultra pure lamp oil is great. Try adding 10 drops of "Breakfree" gun oil to 1 ounce of lamp oil. I usually get a 4 ounce bottles at the drug store. Shake the bottle and your set! Large bottles of Ultra-pure oil is very cheap and a small bottle of Breakfree is about $4. So, for about $12 you can make your own and have enough for a few years!
