Re: The Wedge

Trent,
I can't remember if I said this before but, I think if I were allergic to the gold or silver I would have the mouthpiece modified to use a plastic rim. Maybe get a screw rim made for the Monette. Maybe Dave would help set one up to receive a plastic fit later.

I think I read on TH that Dave Hickman uses plastic because he said there were huge differences in temperature from theater to theater so the plastic evened it out. It's been a long time since I read that post so I might have it wrong.

Re: The Wedge

I suggest sending Dr. Dave an email and asking if he can make a Wedge top in your size in plastic.

He answers his mail and goes the extra mile to make people (at least trumpet players) happy.

Re: The Wedge

Thought someone might be interested in this clip. Dr. Dave sent me a 3A (deep) mouthpiece for my cornet stuff. Well, I didn't have a cornet since the huge amount of Bbs I had. I sold a few (more than a few) Bbs and got a great deal on a L Bore American Bach 25 cornet. While not a "true" cornet in many people's eyes I'm really enjoying playing this. Here's a clip I did earlier today on it with a few friends.... pardon the excess reverb... I'm still getting the hang of my Cakewalk verb settings.

Softly on Wedge 3A - Putfile.com actually putfile has a bunch of wedge clips I've made.

Good news is that I have real studio time in the next few weeks and will record these amazing pieces for real!

Nice Trent. You sound great on those. Glad trumpet is "fun" again.

Re: The Wedge

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the note. It really is fun to play again. I'm like a big kid in a candy store... this time it's not buying equipment to "feed my need" but it's opening up excerpt books, solos, or just PLAYING like I used to when I was young. I can play for hours now and it feels just great. There's normal "fatigue" but unless you've experienced what I did (a SHARP burning pain like you burned your tongue) that's just normal for the course. I played a 4 hour session of trio (cornet/trumpet, bass and drums) and afterwards I was fatigued. By the time I got home I was fine (30 mins later) and practiced some more.

woo-hoo!

Re: The Wedge

This is one of those design ideas that does seem to have a ring of truth about it.
It does make sense.
Neil Sanders made horn and trumpet mouthpices that were round but shaped to fit the lips (in a different way to the wedge though).

I am intrigued to try one for piccolo trumpet but not sure what it would do to my ability to play on a normal mouthpiece (being another Monette player I have to use his mouthpieces).

Re: The Wedge

After playing a Wedge for a while, my old mouthpiece feels a bit weird, but it isn't bad enough that I can't play it. It is just different.
I hope Dr. Dave comes out with a cornet cup and a flugel cup so I can play the Wedge on them as well.
