Lead MPC

Well I was trying to be funny ... ... guess not!

Anyway, if one can work their towards a very high compression mpc, the easier the upper register becomes.

Mine is a Reeves ES cup - #30 bore hole - 692s bb - #5 shank. It took me a bit to get use to it, but for the past year ... GREAT!

GR Northern Brass GP***, if you use a very efficient embochure it is deadly! Also trying out a new Monette Prana BL4 to go along with one of their horns.....

I just tried the BL4, and was not incredibly happy with it. Kind of a wierd cup shape. I'll stick to my Marcinkiewicz 12.4. The Prana just had too big of a throat for me.

Robert Rowe is on a distinguished road
On the cornet, gotta go with either of my two approx 90-yr old Conn Wonders (those of you that are familiar with these know what I'm talking about -- "classic" cornet tones like nothing else).

On trumpet, a vintage (about 60-yrs old) Parduba #4, or a newer one that Dick Akright made-up for me. Harry knew a good thing.

Well, just an update, simply because I like to think someone might actually care...

I got a Schilke 14A4A and 14 over the holidays. I'm still adjusting, but I like them a lot. The switching between them is different, but not impossible. I think if I get about a month or so of practice on them, I'll be pretty good.

I have been lucky to end up with quite the mouthpiece collection. From 7C to 5B to Olds 3 to Merian C..... I have nine (Gave my blessing 3C to my more promising trumpet student) altogether, my newest one being a Holton V-cup that came with this Bundy trumpet I was given. BTW, a V-cup really doesn't work with me....

I've found the feel of a Jettone Merian C really feels good. I'm unsure about the diameter, but I feel comfortable switching between it, my 5B, and my 68MD Laskey. Maybe you should look into it?

How did I miss seeing this earlier...

So, what kinda tone quality do you get out of the Merian? I looked at one a LONG (as in high school) time ago, but opted for a GR 3HC (can we say...mistake?).

The puzzle just keeps getting more and more confusing. I would give a lot to live right next to WWBW right now.

Edit: Well, I think what will happen is I will go with a Bach 1 1/2 C, and a Schilke 14 or 15 A4A. But, there is also the possibility of me trying a couple of Fokus mp's, and Marcinkiewicz, and GRs, and...nevermind
CRAP! I missed this reply by a mile at least! Apologies, Michael!

Well, when I first got it, I hated it, but I couldn't return it. I was really REALLY pissed, and only started playing it a few months ago because I finally got over it, lol.

The double cup, and shallower cup requires a more mature set of chops, IMO. I can control the piece a whole lot better than I could before, and could get a pleasing sound from it, though it makes the sound have a real focus, bright core. Don't use the piece with a lightweight bell, you'd kill people. It makes my pedals slightly more difficult, but it can be controled, and mainly just needs a different approach in air. The upper register also requires a different approach, but when you figure it out, you can really impress yourself with how clear and crisp the upper register pops out!

Its the only piece I can really hit the double notes in, and is the piece I used to produce the double F. Of course, that was my old embochure. I havent yet started messing with my different mouthpieces, I've only been "Farkasing" for four days, lol.

The Merian is a GREAT lead piece for players who want the shallow sound, but despise the shallow, Vee feel of most lead pieces.

I. Despise. Vee. Cups.

Michael, keep us updated on how the transition to your new piece goes along. I'll be sure to pull my head out of my *place* and keep my eye on this topic better.
