![]() | Manny - apologies for going off-topic, maybe you are saying that you should actually be a referee (keeping with the sporting theme)? How about - James Cracknell. Somebody that not everyone will have heard of, who is a vital part of a small team that produce outstanding results and who does a huge amount of outreach into the younger people in his sport. The sport also has quite a bit to do with the water, something that people who keep track of my hair will understand Oh for those of you who don't know him - he is part of the UK coxless four rowing team - they have a habit of winning a lot (if only I had this attribute). |

But the keeper can. I love the yellow cards and the red cards though. Kicking someone from behind, players faking and falling down. And then injury time (kept mysteriously by the referee). Penalty kicks, which are a sure thing unless the keeper "guesses" right. Oh yea, world football (soccer) is a thrill a minute. One - nill. My favorite. Lots of whistles -- except they do not regroup to make sense of it. It just keeps going unless someone pushes or makes an illegal tackle (which happens about every 15 seconds) or the ball goes out-of-bounds -- then another whistle. Corner kicks are amusing. Someone kicks it from the corner and everyone pushes and shoves to get into position to put their HEAD on the ball. I do not know of another game that you actually want the ball to hit your head. But if the kick is in the wide open then someone tries a bicycle kick -- that is fun when it works (once in about a million times). Maybe if they rode bicycles and played it like polo And if you have read this far, and are taking me seriously .... gotcha! Jim

![]() | We could use a trumpet player like Arnold Palmer. He was well schooled in the basics, courageous, loved to compete, and did everything he could to advance his chosen profession. In all his success and glory he never lost his humility and concern for his fellow players. He pretty much made professional golf what it is today. I saw him at a tournament one time playing with an unknown rooky. He went out of his way to put the rooky at ease, talking with him, etc. On one green, the crowd (Arnie's Army) started moving after Arnie putted out, but while the rooky was trying to putt. Arnie moved forward, looked at the crowd, and politely asked them to show some respect for the other player and not move or talk until he was done. If you're a golfer you will understand what this meant. Larry |

Well . . . in high school and early college . . . it would be Jim Ryun, a guy who, at the time, was America's greatest miler! I was a super-light (131 lbs. @ 5' 9") long distance runner then. Ya might beat me for a couple of laps . . . but after that I was G - O - N - E! I ran the mile through the marathon and was ranked 2nd in Florida as a high schooler in 1969. My first year in college I had to give up track when my father got real sick. It was time to get a job to help pay the bills and try to hang in at school. Then I "won" the draft lottery and decided to enlist in an Army band. I figured they'd eventually get me anyway and I couldn't attend school enough hours to keep my "2-S" student deferment. Alas . . . that was a long time ago . . . about 130 pounds to be exact! Now I'd say William Perry ("The Refrigerator"), the freak Offensive Lineman/"Running Back" for the Chicago Bears a few years ago. However, I've finally gone on a diet and started exercising this year . . . on my way to becoming a big loser. My goal is to get to 170 pounds . . . and my other goal is to not arrive at the "Finish Line" of life as fast as I was going towards it! Tom | |
