While I'm thinking about it, how good are music scholarships in places outside Tennessee? Can someone get free rides?

Gosh, I REALLY enjoyed my sorta student teaching last semester (They gave me 2nd graders to teach one hour for a week). I actually have given thought to going into Elementary Education...

If you can get used to the off-the-wall questions and remarks they sometimes make, they can be really neat.

I think every college has the departments that just look to take all of your money. Our education department is that. 250 bucks extra to take an introduction course. RIDICULOUS.

Oh, and while I'm fuming over colleges, what about the whole credit card thing?

Heres the current offer:

Re: College Ed. Departments

Van,

I think you have three appointments to make:

1) The University President who works for you (not many students realize that). He needs to hear about things like you being forced to join an organization to pass a class, which is probably illegal at worst, and unprofessional at best. He needs to hear about your being asked to buy books and software that you don't use.

2) The Head of the Education Department who needs to hear the exact same things. You need to make this person aware that you are also speaking to the President and....

3) The University student Ombudsman who will make certain that your complaints have been heard.

When I was in school I was equally upset about a few things that made little or no sense. I went to the trouble to visit with the people I mentioned and also the head of the music department. When I was a senior our school was going through a 10-year review. They remembered my visits and I was asked to serve on a student committee to raise concerns about the current curriculum.

The outcome was that the curriculum was changed a little (two classes to be exact). My concerns were about some science classes that we were taking and two classes were changed, one to a physical science class, and one to an acoustics class - both of which would help us a musicians.

I graduated before the changes were made, but the students to this day are taking the classes I fought for while in school. If you let your voice be heard, in an adult like manner, you may be able to change things for future students. Nobody will ever know it was you who helped, but it will make things better for the students who follow in your footsteps in the future.

1: Every education class seems more like an effort to take all of your money. The 201 class book, costs $100, plus the separate CD, which was 50 (Never opened it, its sitting on my dresser STILL) AN INTRODUCTION COURSE COSTS MORE THAN A LAB!!! AN INTRO CLASS BOOK COSTS MORE THAN A SCIENCE BOOK!!!

2: Part of the requirements for passing the course was I had to become a member of STEA. I dont think its fair, forcing people to join an organization to pass a class. Plus, it was 40 bucks I could have spent on trumpets...

3: (For people presently in music ed.) LIVETEXT, another required program you had to own, is pure garbage. PLUS, it is 70 bucks. I'VE USED IT ONCE TO DATE!!!

4: My STEA is worthless. I've went to one meeting to date, because all the meetings before were scheduled during band events. Its a bunch of girls fighting over meaningless positions. Like high school class president.

I've been told the other two education courses I have to take, technology in the classroom, and charts and graphs, will cost EVEN MORE. Its ridiculous. The education department is just grubbing around for all the cash I have.

Oh, and I forgot the big PRAXIS II, that'll probably cost an arm and a leg to take. ARRRGGHHH!

Maybe I should have majored in basket weaving.

Van
it sounds like your problems are out side of the normal BS( of which there is plenty), I think you should speak to the dept head, save the higher ups for later...

the Praxis II is too hard( and cost to much $) for these people to be taking your money and not really preping you for it. I passed it 1st time, but i know alot of folks who had to take it 3 or more times.

one more thing, your college should have data on praxis II pass rates posted on the internet or available by other means. you might want to get your hands on it now so you know what you are in for.
