Re: Do you Download Music for Free or Pay?

I buy most everything from iTunes. Generally I am happy with the music and Apple seems to have more of the "unusual" stuff available.

It does not matter what you call it. That music cut that you download is actually only a license for YOU to use it. Think of it like a book - only one person can read it at one time. Any additional copies that are created for reasons other than YOUR OWN LISTENING or backup are just plain THEFT. We do not need to argue about record company profits, that just is an attempt to draw attention away from the stealing.

I would normally go into a rant here about the lost joy of saving for something and finally reaching your goal. The Nintendo Generation has been in many cased spoiled rotten, and even although they have more material goods than any generation before them, it still isn't enough, so they STEAL. Sorry, I can't help myself here..........

Re: Do you Download Music for Free or Pay?

I agree with you, generally, Rowuk. But I don't think it's only generational. I don't know how many trumpet professors/performers older than me that I've met with shelves full of photocopied etude books, quintet books, etc. That's why stuff goes out of print, but no one seems to feel they are part of the problem themselves. That said, it's obvious that this is becoming more widespread and that the right/wrong question is being wilfully obscured.

The OP's question of "why would I pay when I can get it for free" is a bit coarse, but it's a good, stark economic point. My answer is: I pay for music because it has value to me. I may look for bargains, but I don't steal.

I hope someday all artists are able to take control again of how their work is disseminated. In the meantime, we should make sure that we know if free downloads are actually being offered by the artist, or have been disseminated by someone else illegally.

Robin is right - theft is theft, no matter how easy or widespread it is. If you choose not to feel guilty, fine. But don't rationalize it as something other than what it is.

I agree 100%. By Nintendo Generation, I meant this generation with universal 24x7 access to technology that makes theft easier than ever before. Naturally a miserable role model lowers the threshold of guilt!

Re: Do you Download Music for Free or Pay?

I buy almost everything. It cost a bundle, but I don't like taking money away from people that worked their a$$ off to make those recordings and most of the orchestras need the money. As for print music if we don't buy it it goes POP and increases the cost of what is in print I think. (the almost is when playing a show that I don't think is that great, I borrow the recording from the library listen to it a few times and return it without taping it)

Re: Do you Download Music for Free or Pay?

How about all the Fake Books out there? :)

They weren't printed by the "Nintendo Generation". And music "theft" as you call it Rowuk existed ever since the tape deck exists.

So please...

Re: Do you Download Music for Free or Pay?

You can't say it's "just plain theft", because it is a little different. The traditional sense of the word 'theft' implies that you are taking something that does not belong to you, and thereby depriving the original owner of that property. In this case you are depriving noone of that property, just duplicating it. The only thing you are avoiding is the payment that you may or may not have been willing to give to buy the music. Therefore it is only stealing if you would have bought the music in the absence of opportunity to download it.
