WHAT? You two made it all the way to NC without at least one of you not being asked to wear a blind-fold??

Liad,

I bought something called a TomTom Go. It works very well, is preloaded with maps for the contiguous 48 states and is brainless which is the main appeal. It's pricy but if you have to do a lot of traveling to places that are confusing it's a good gadget. There are two versions: the 300 and the 700.

There are systems made by Magellan, as well. You can spend as much or as little as you want, to a point. It's just a question of convenience.

Good luck finding something usable,

ML

i prefer built-in GPS units instead, a little sleeker looking

i did a little custom work with my Audi A8L though and took a 40GB hard drive and loaded all the maps for the 50 States plus Canada and Some of North Mexico, I have a friend at Audi that helped me with it, since Audi is switching to Hard Drive based GPS sys.'s soon (Shh, you didn't hear that) he had all the componets at his dealership. Took my about 2 hours to do, but if you aren't good with stuff like that DO NOT ATTEMPT IT, i had to mount it in the trunk, and remove the DVD reader that was there, BIG P.I.T.A. and hook up some new converters for all the cables

but i the end it was worth it.

THIS IS CORRECT NOT A LIE, I DID DO THIS, I DO HAVE A FRIEND AT AUDI, THE MAN WHO PURCHASED THIS CAR WAS A BIG TRAVELER, SO IN ORDER TO NOT LOSE THE SALE, I AND A FRIEND DID THIS, HE BOUGHT THE CAR and hasnt had a problem since

I am particularly interested in knowing how these maps are updated, how do you know the date of the update if any, who does the update and if this update is accessible via internet?

My wife works for the Central Office of the Department of Education in Jerusalem and she at times has to travel to any and all schools in Israel should a new program/problem arise.

Is this map programmable? In other words, if one does not want to pass through certain cities/routes, can these be excluded/re-routed?

The streets out here are poorly marked and if marked, they are hard to read and impossible to see at night; therefore, getting lost is easy to do. All the time we hear of people getting lost and coming back in a body bag and sometimes not in one piece. One natural thing for one to do to get directions is to stop the car and ask someone on the sidewalk not knowing that that someone could be directing you to a terrorists cell location.

Just got a GPS, Acer N35, put it to work and it was great.

We were on our way to a wedding, the car was full, it was night and in the back roads of Israel, very little lighting on the street, etc and my wife decided to not turn where the GPS told us to turn; so, it recalculated the route automatically. My wife did not know of the turn that the GPS informed us about; so, did not take it. Come to find out on the way back, that the missed turn was a newly constructed road and it would have saved us another 10 minutes of driving had we taken it.

Other family members who left at the same time as we did, arrived an hour and a half later. Just by not having to do the extra driving, paying more money for gas and frustration makes us appreciative of the GPS already.

It has built in preprogrammed areas on where not to travel in Israel for security reasons. It's bilingual (Eng & Hebrew)

It was telling us which lane to get into to make turns, when the turn was coming up within 3 KM, 500 M, 300 M, 200 M. It lets you know the total distance of the trip.

It also stated when we were driving too fast for the area.

When hand held in other cars and also while walking, it will tell you were to go should you be down town, it's crowed and you’re sort of lost.

It's easy to read with it day/night time and 2D/3D viewing screens. You can see all the curves in the road, the other roads, etc next to the symbol of where you are on the road.

I got rid of this GPS model and I'm looking at the Lowrance iWay 500c and the Tom Tom Go models. Consumer Reports rates them pretty high. Anybody have one of these models?

How about the Mio or the Asus GPS models?

Thank for your post concerning the Tom Tom Go. It has a fraction of the memory compared to the Lowrance iWay 500c that has 20 Gig but then again why do I need to load up MP3 files?

One question to you though concerning the Tom Tom Go. Is it portable and can you use it while walking?

The one that I bought at TOYOTA, Acer N35 which has only 31meg, was loaded with a copy of an Israeli map, which got deleted, came with no backup nor original disk, no manual, etc and so I returned it with the thought of taking them to court. I can believe that a major car company would do such a thing right when you are buying one of their new cars.

Thanks,

Liad

Yes, Liad, that's one of the selling points; that you can use it for strolling aout. It's about the size of a baseball.
