Dear Glenn,

That composer is Silvestre Revueltas. I'm glad you like that piece, too. While I have never heard the band version, we played Sensemaya in high school with my youth orchestra and it was the first modern crazy music I'd ever heard. I loved it! Mexican composer writing about Cuban/African ritualistic snake killing... wow!

My favourites have already been mentioned but I still have to mention them:

First Suite in E-flat for Military Band – Gustav Holst
Second Suite for Military Band in F Major – Gustav Holst
Russian Christmas Music – Alfred Reed

But I've also really enjoyed:
English Folksong Suite
Appalachian Spring

All of them bring back great memories of the groups I was playing with at the time!

Ed, I'm looking forward to Cable's new Cowboy Suite!

Three Russian Cameos, don't remember who.
it's a really easy arrangement, probably level 3, but it's so awesome. I love the communist feel to it, with the little war requiem in the middle, with a bari sax solo played by yours truly.

Carnaval Sao Paulo is so much fun to play! I love it!

Anything by Holst I will love. Same with Shoshtakovich...

Bandman,
Thanks! Our band directors push us...but we get to play lots of fun stuff!

You guys all seem to have covered the pieces I like (Incantation, First and Second Suite, etc), but one I noticed isn't on here is El Camino Real by Alfred Reed (First Trumpet for those who want to know). If you've never heard it you should try to find a recording, it's an amazing piece. Pots
ETDelete- Thought it was orchestral as well, not symphonic.

bandman will become famous soon enough
Look at the list of great pieces we have put together, and we all agree that it is FUN to play this great liturature. Doesn't this make you wonder why every kid in school doesn't want to be in the band?

Kids today play video games, and as they get better the get to move onto higher more difficult levels. The same exact theory goes for music in band -- the longer you play the better you get so the music gets more fun. Oh how my life would have been different without band and music in general!
