They seem to maintain temperature inside much longer than traditional homes. We have an actual iron stove sitting on exposed stone where you can open the doors and see the fire. All you have to do is put it on low with the fan going and it heats up the house in no time. I could actually cook on this thing if I wanted to. I love the way the wood crackles with the change in temperature and sun exposure. I feel like I am living in harmony with my surroundings and that the house is actually alive like the trees. Do you have the exposed tongue and groove and beams in yours Gary? Gotta love all of the wood surrounding you, eh? I know I do.

Take care

Enough you two... some of us are not so lucky!

One of my best memories of log cabins involves my college teacher, Herb Mueller.

Although he was a great trumpeter and teacher, Mr. Mueller's heart was really in living the life of a woodsman / farmer. He owned 30+ acres outside of Ithaca, NY. On it he built a cabin, a cellar and a barn... all with the help of students over many years. Eventually he put in two large ponds. The acreage also included a apple orchard. No electricity. I once asked why... "then my wife would want to come out here"... he loved her dearly but really valued his time "roughing it" on the farm. Anyway, the deal was you gave him a full day of work and you'd get a extra lesson. The day usually included all the venisen stew you could eat. During his last few months, I was allowed to go spend weekends at the cabin alone (sometimes with a date)... Being a city boy... this expereince will never be forgotten. Middle of a cold wintery night... having to use the facilities where none was available... no turning on of a switch for light.. water came from a windmill... Lots of noises from wildlife... Great days to remember... all that from the talk of a fire burning in a iron stove...

Thanks Alex and Mr Semman... cherish your lifestyle!

Here you go Rogerio. This was taken last February when a little dusting of snow passed through.

And here is one in the early spring

Gosh Alex, looks just like Phoenix!

Thanks for posting those pictures. Beautiful... I can almost smell the moist dewy air in the morning with the occasional scent of burning wood... the ground crackling under every step...

Alex,

Beautiful place you have there.

I've wanted a log home for years now, still waiting and saving for it.

Thank you Warren. We saved for ten years while living in a townhouse to buy this place. I felt bad for the couple who sold it to us though. They raised their family here for fifteen years. They did not want to leave and had planned on spending the rest of their days here, but because of aging problems, they never used the entire upstairs - which has two bedrooms, 1 bath and a huge loft area overlooking the downstairs (that is my trumpet area until we get the conversion of the shop out back to my studio finished). The sad news for them was when they realized it is much more expensive now to build one of these than it used to be. The outside is solid Cypress, the inside a mix of Cypress and Pine and it sits on 1.5 acres. That might not sound like a lot, but in HOTlanta's current real estate climate, it is. We feel very fortunate to have grabbed it when we did. It would be unaffordable for us as well in today's market just for the property alone.

P.S. Keeping with this thread's original intention......Our townhouse used to be right next to Dobbins Air Force Base, so I have had my share of jets flying over. LOL. They blew out the windows of my neighbors townhouse one time!

Alex,

Nice Pics of the cabin. Looks very much like mine. I have a diningroom extension on the right side with a walkout bay window, and an atrium door going out to the deck, which connects to the front porch. I don't know about you, but we spend a lot of time on that front porch watching the birds hit the feeders.

Playing the horn in the greatroom sounds great doesn't it?

Gary
