Re: A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

Maybe a few letters from families who were happy to have you give the final honor to their loved ones.
If the prof understands the value to these families in particular and to the community in general he (she?) may adjust policy.

I was a Navy man and have been to many funerals of family, friends and shipmates and the live bugler makes a BIG difference.

When I recover my health enough I plan to play for those we have lost.

You need to talk to the Dean of Students or the Department Head. The professor is following a list of requirements. The list needs to be waivered for you.

I would suggest you start having taps seminars for high school students. Put together a half day or full day seminar where you teach them a warm up, how to stand, where to stand and how to play taps correctly. You should emphasize that taps has straight eighth notes in the middle. Play the taps recording from the Army site or Arlington National Cemetary site. Those two sites play taps correctly. Work them hard for a few hours playing together and as soloists.

Re: A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

Long ago I woke up every morning on an Army base. And went to sleep on an Army base. This is because I was in the Army, and training long days - Basic is quite a jar to someone used to well .... not being in Basic. No radios, not much talking, and tons to learn. And I got used to thinking just about what I was going to do THIS hour, not the next one, let that take care of itself. And morning and night I heard the bugle calls and let me tell you, whoever was doing them, was a musician. Those calls were music and some of the most soulful, real music I've heard in my life. It was the highlight of the day, especially in the evening, to listen to that bugler and soak up every accent on every note.

Hm, I don't remember the soupy-soupy one!

I want to learn 'em all from that Army site though, that'd be cool.

Re: A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

Does anyone know where I could go to experience drill instruction without going to basic training? Like a summer camp or something? I want a drill instructor in my face, and I want to learn drill and ceremony. It's my life dream, and if someone could help me make it come true, I would be so excited!

Re: A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

I think we need to separate some things here.
IF you enter a school, your grades are based on YOUR performance. If your performance (including attendance) is not up to par, then you DESERVE a bad note. The school and teacher are not the bad guys, YOU are not living up to the school standards regardless of how honorable your side activity is. YOU need to be aware that YOUR signature is your commitment and that applies to your studies too!
Do you think that you have any chance with an employer if you do not hold up your end of the bargain? Will they be willing to take an honorable employee that places other interests above his job? You are travelling a dangerous road if your future is supposed to generate long term income.

That all being said, it is YOUR job to uphold your commitments. If the school is aware and approves of this activity, you will get a waiver or other concessions. That needs to be cleared up BEFOREHAND.

Bottom line, YOU are the bad guy until YOU get permission to get away with things that no other student may. Doing honorable things does not balance your lack of consideration to the prof and other students!

Re: A Good Course of Study that Would Help Veterans?

It's not as if you are skipping class just to skip class. Besides, I rarely went to class and I had great grades. You're not a bad guy for being a little patriotic and doing something you like. stchasking had a great idea with the seminars for high school students. Hearing people play Taps incorrectly is probably the only thing I hate more than hearing it played digitally. In the end, it is entirely up to you if the Dean of Students should deny your request, to skip and play anyway. But don't listen to me. I always thought it better to beg for foregiveness than to ask for permission if it were something I was really passionate about.
