![]() | Gordon Goodwin's Phat Band -- new CD -- The Phat Pack I received my copy of the new Gordon Goodwin CD today! Once again the band is very tight, and if you like this type of music it is a must have. My favorite track was La Almeja Pequena with a wonderful trombone solo by Andy Martin, and a trumpet solo like only the great Wayne Bergeron that starts off with a little more funk than I’m accustomed to hearing Bergeron play. After a few measures it becomes another vintage Bergeron solo. I had to listen to it a couple times before coming to the conclusion that I loved it even though it’s just a little different. There was also some incredible trumpet sectional work on this track. Even Braver, Even Stronger (An American Elegy) will send chills through your body every time – WOW!!! There is some incredible writing here, in an unmistakable American style. Solos by Wayne Bergeron, Sal Lozano (flute), and Jeff Driskill (clarinet) just add to the magic of this amazing selection. The rest of the tracks are great as well! This is a gotta have it CD from a band that only seems to get better and better.

![]() | Did you find the beginning of the solo a lot different than his solos of the past? I think Wayne is the very best (for me he is the Superman of the trumpet) and I found it interesting that he started a solo just a little differently than in the past. As usual it was great, just different -- sometimes different is good!

![]() | I honestly hadnt thought about it too much, but on listening to it again, i certainly see what you mean. That's one of my favorite parts of his solo, along with the half valving. As far as him being the superman of trumpet... yeah, i agree :O |
