| Forte User | The coldest it gets here in Tennessee is maybe a few degrees below 0 once in a *very* blue moon. I hate the heat. I plan on moving to Alaska, having an Inuit wife, building a little log cabin, and taking a dog sled team to teach my students.... Van

![]() | I love the winter and the cold! No bugs, no tourists, less traffic. Did some "extreme camping" last year, "bivvied" (no tent) outside with minus Fahrenheit (or is that "Farfegnugen" or "Fukengruvin"?) for a couple days. Not a big deal with modern "technical fabric" clothing and outdoor gear. Watch out for those "brown falcons", though (not many of you will know what this refer to). Robert Rowe |

![]() | Today (Mon 17 Jan 05) -- minus 54-degrees F., in Embarrass, MN (USA) --- and it's not a record. Glad I don't have to do a memorial service today at a Veteran's Cemetery ...(I don't have a Lexan mpc.) (I'm surprised no-one inquired about "brown falcons" from my previous post -- probably, were afraid to ask -- can't blame them, I suppose.) Robert Rowe |

| Forte User | *AHEM* Mr. Rowe, what is a "Brown Falcon?" Lord, the second you mention the color "brown" in a story about the outdoors, I IMMEDIATELY assume the worst... Van

![]() | For Van -- Your suspicions are correct. I am quite the "outdoorsman" -- camping, hiking, surfing, etc. Occasionally, I do a bit of mountain-climbing ... I'm no Sir Edmund Hillary and I can't afford Sherpas, but I do manage to scale some pretty-scarey peaks. As you might surmise, Nature sometimes calls when one is dangling off a ledge, or on a verticle ascent. Modern technical gear and clothing has provided some ingenious front-to-back openings in the crotch-area of climbing pants (sometimes called "rainbows") to provide for, uh ... you know .... Soooo - gravity being what it is, and having no convenient Porta-John around, one must simply "let loose". As far as I know, there is no universal warning call, like when golfers yell "fore!"; and any climbers at elevations lower and under the said climber are subject to the dreaded "brown falcons". Sometimes, when climbing, and reaching upwards to secure a hand-hold, one has the unpleasant experience of grabbing a previously deposited "brown falcon". Of course, falling is the worst thing, but these experiences definitely put a "damper" on the fun part. Oh -- "Zip-Loc" bags don't help -- they concentrate the "war-head". ..."necessity is a Mother ...." (or something like that). Robert Rowe |

![]() | Nice weather here in the NorthEast / Mid-Atlantic today -- if you are acustomed to the Arctic Circle or Antartica. I was in the Philadelphia / central New Jersey area yesterday (Sat) to deliver a guitar to a collector. Was worth the effort (driving 100 miles in "blizzard" conditions took about 5-hrs ... lotsa "white-knuckled geezers" to contend with) -- the proceeds from the transaction are paying for a vintage Committee. ![]() | wow, 100 miles in this weather, hope you had four wheel drive, In Boston we've got some giant drifts, 5-6 feet high, the accumulation proly isn't more than two feet, but the wind is blowing like crazy so it piles up in some places, what a storm, I'm not going anywhere today or tonight, well except out the front door to get the first rounds of shoveling done, the dogs love it though
