Johntpt is on a distinguished road
In 5th grade I wanted to play trombone but my uncle found a good deal on an old Olds Ambassador cornet. Now it's kind of funny - I don't think I'd be a professional player if I had played the trombone!

My 5th grade music teacher brought in her sons cornet to class one day and let us all try it. I got what I thought was a decent sound off it so when they came around recruiting for band I decided to try the trumpet.

I've got 3 sons ages 7,6, and 4 and the 7 yr old can make a noise on it from his natural attempts. I'm not going to force or push anything but if they want to pursue it I will help them.

I'm trying to take the same approach with the computer. I started on it at a young age and now make my living with it but it was never forced on me by my dad either.

My best friend started playing trumpet in 4th grade. I broke one of the commandments and coveted my neighbor's goods(We even went to a Catholic grade school - don't tell the nuns ). After a lot of drooling and creative persuasion, my parents gave in and let me start in 6th grade. One of the deals was that I needed to practice every night if they let me start. I loved it so much, there were nights they had to tell me to stop practicing so that I didn't wake my brothers and sisters.

I'm with Alex. I didn't choose the trumpet, it chose me, only I didn't have someone telling me I should play it.

In fourth grade I heard Doc play a concert here in Rochester, MN, and knew from that moment I had to play the trumpet. So in fifth grade when we got to start band and pick our instrument, I boldly walked up to the director and proclaimed, "I want to play the trumpet".

Ok, maybe in a way someone (Doc) was telling me to play the trumpet.

Alex, I also started out on drums. Took lessons in third grade, but once I heard Doc that's all she wrote for percussion.

Believe this! I've been a guitar player for 30-something years and a lover/student of all kinds of music. A little over two years ago, I took my wife to see Sting play. Botti was on stage with him then. I was floored by the power and expression of the horn. I found him and we had a short chat after the show. I went home and started hunting/reading/ talking bout trumpets. I got a good horn and a teacher immediately. I've been seriously hooked since. I play way more trumpet than guitar these days, at least as far as 'hours' go. I'm still a working guitarist, at least part-time, and really looking forward to playing the trumpet out in public as well. I am very, very close. My teacher is very encouraging & appears quite puzzled at the progress I've been able to make in the span of 2 years; though I'm personally noticing the learning curve really start to flatten out. Hey, when you're pushing 50, you'd better make every day count! It's been a blast & I'm keeping at it, every day! Strange how things happen, huh? 'Splains why I often back-up Botti on threads that bash him too, I guess.

I chose trumpet because I wanted to play the melody and not count rests.

tracistar will become famous soon enough
I actually wanted to play percussion instruments too... but we happened to have a trumpet at my house. So, instead of buying something new, we went with the logical. I loved it from the start. (My older sister started out on trumpet before she switched to french horn-- so things worked out perfectly!)

Re: How did you get to choose trumpet as your main instrument?

I started in band in the 8th grade because I just didn't want to take another year of Shop Class. My father had played the trumpet so that was a natural choice for me. The band director tried to talk me into a trombone, and when I think of the size of that horn compared to a trumpet, I glad I stuck to my choice.
